Briony sat down across from Stewart.

Marlene placed a bowl of porridge in front of her and, glancing at Stewart, tried to smooth things over for him.

“Mr. Wentworth is just putting on a brave face. He doesn’t want to appear weak in front of the children!”

Stewart cleared his throat, doing his best to salvage the situation.

“The wound feels much better today, and the bandages have loosened a bit, so I have some movement in my fingers.”

Briony had seen right through his little act, but considering the sacrifice he’d made, she didn’t have the heart to disappoint him further. She’d play along for a few days, like humoring a child.

“As long as it’s improving,” Briony said. “After breakfast, I’ll take you to the hospital to get the dressing changed and for your IV.”

Stewart looked at her.

Briony kept her head down, sipping her porridge. Seeing that her expression was normal and she wasn't angry, Stewart quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

After breakfast, Briony prepared to take Stewart to the hospital. She also planned to visit Stella while they were there.

Little Nina and Mario clamored to go with them. But hospitals were full of germs, and Briony didn't want to take them. When they heard they couldn't come, both children pouted, their faces mirroring each other in disappointment.

Briony was at a loss.

“Mommy and Daddy are going for a check-up. You two be good and stay home with your baby sister. Daddy will be staying here for a few days, so we’ll have plenty of time together.”

That seemed to satisfy them. They obediently waved goodbye to their parents.

Briony drove, with Stewart in the passenger seat. The ride was silent.

“Because you couldn’t bear to gamble with my life.”

Stewart stared at her, stunned.

He just looked at her, speechless.

“I know.” Stewart’s heart fluttered. He was touched and thrilled. “Bryn, thank you. Thank you for understanding me, and thank you for being willing to trust me again.”

“It was all just a misunderstanding.” As she said this, Briony herself felt a little embarrassed. “I used to think you and Xenia had really gotten married, and I treated you horribly. Looking back, it wasn’t fair to you.”
