Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 139

Chapter 139

Damon pov

I stood quietly in the doorway, unwilling to interrupt, watching my parents together in a moment so tender and raw it felt almost like trespassing simply to witness it.

My father lay against the pillows, still pale from the earlier scare, his breathing slower now, more measured, though exhaustion remained etched deeply into every line of his face. My mother sat beside him on the edge of the bed, both his hands held gently in hers, her voice carrying soft, steady reassurance despite the obvious tremor still

audible beneath her calm.

“Just calm down, Robert,” she said quietly, her thumb tracing gentle circles against his palm. “Our son’s got this. He’s already got Callum coordinating everything, Ashford sending additional trackers. You don’t need to carry this fear right now. Just breathe, just rest.”

He nodded slightly, though his eyes remained fixed on her face with an intensity that spoke to everything still unspoken between them, everything still fragile and uncertain despite the genuine tenderness of this exact

moment.

“Don’t leave us,” my mother said suddenly, her voice breaking, tears spilling silently down her face despite her obvious effort to maintain composure for his sake. “Robert, please. Not now, not after everything we’re finally starting to rebuild.”

His hands moved slowly, gently, freeing themselves from her grip to instead reach up and brush the tears from her cheeks, his thumbs wiping carefully at the wetness there with a tenderness I rarely witnessed from him even during the best moments of my childhood.

“I will fight to stay,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion despite its quiet, deliberate strength. “I promise you that, Sarah. Whatever it takes, however hard my heart has to work, I will fight to stay here, with you, with Damon, with Willow and the new baby coming. I’m not ready to leave any of you, not after everything we’re finally getting the chance to actually rebuild.”

She let out a shaky, tearful breath, leaning forward to rest her forehead gently against his, both of them simply breathing together for a long moment, the raw intimacy of it settling something warm and aching in my own chest as I continued watching from the doorway.

“I love you,” she said quietly, the words carrying a weight I understood immediately given everything complicated in their history-thirty years of marriage, separation papers, the slow, uncertain rebuilding of something genuine despite everything broken between them.

“I love you too,” he said, his voice thick with genuine, unguarded emotion. “I don’t think I ever properly told you that, not the way you actually deserved to hear it. Not consistently, not without conditions or distractions or my own selfish priorities taking precedence.”

“You’re telling me now,” she said softly. “That matters, Robert. Maybe more than you realize.”

I finally stepped forward, unable to continue simply observing this private, tender moment without

acknowledging my presence, and both of them looked up, my mother wiping quickly at her remaining tears, my father managing a tired but genuine smile despite everything.

“Sorry to interrupt,” I said quietly. “I wanted to check how you’re doing, Dad.”

“Better,” he said, his voice still carrying exhaustion but genuine steadiness now. “Your mother’s helping, more than she probably realizes.”

I moved further into the room, settling into the chair near the bed, watching them both with careful, grateful attention. “The healers confirmed you avoided a full cardiac event, but they were clear that continued stress like this genuinely risks your survival long-term.”

“I know,” he said quietly. “I heard them clearly enough, even through my own panic.”

“We’re going to find her,” I said firmly. “Ashford’s sending trackers, additional resources. Callum’s coordinating everything. I promise you, Dad, we’re going to end this threat permanently, before it manages to cost us anything

more.”

He nodded slowly, though I could see lingering fear still present beneath his attempted composure. “I trust you, Damon. I trust that you’re doing everything genuinely possible to protect this family. I just-” His voice caught slightly. “I’m frightened. Genuinely, thoroughly frightened, in a way I don’t think I’ve ever experienced before, even during my own military training, even during the worst pack conflicts I navigated as Alpha.”

“That’s completely understandable,” my mother said gently, taking his hand again. “You’ve survived two cardiac events and a violent physical attack, all within a few short weeks. Fear is a genuinely reasonable response to everything you’ve endured.”

“I keep thinking about what I told you,” he said quietly, looking at her. “About fighting to stay. I meant it completely, Sarah. But I don’t know if simple determination alone is actually enough to overcome whatever additional damage continued stress might inflict on my heart.”

“Then we protect you from that stress as much as genuinely possible,” she said firmly. “All of us, working together. Damon’s already coordinating additional security. I’m not leaving your side unless absolutely necessary. We’re going to do everything within our power to actually give you the peaceful recovery your heart genuinely needs.”
