Damon pov
Twenty-eight hours.
Twenty-eight grueling, exhausting hours of labor, watching Evelyn fight through pain and exhaustion with the same fierce determination I'd come to genuinely admire in her over these past several months, before finally, in the early hours of morning, our son entered the world.
"A boy," the healer said, something surprised in her voice as she lifted him carefully. "We'd anticipated a girl, based on earlier readings, but this is definitely a strong, healthy boy."
I stared, disbelief and overwhelming joy crashing through me simultaneously as they placed him against Evelyn's chest, his small, furious cries filling the room, his tiny fists already curling with the same fierce energy I imagined he'd carry throughout his entire life.
"He's perfect," Evelyn whispered, exhaustion evident in every line of her face but overwhelming, genuine love shining through despite it. "Damon, look at him. He's absolutely perfect."
I moved closer, my hand trembling slightly as I reached out to touch his tiny fingers, understanding with overwhelming, humbling clarity exactly how much this moment mattered—not just another child, but proof of everything we'd survived together, everything we'd fought so desperately to protect and rebuild.
"What should we name him," Evelyn asked softly, watching him settle against her chest, his cries gradually quieting now that he'd found comfort against her warmth.
I considered it carefully, thinking about everything he represented—resilience, hope, the genuine culmination of everything our family had endured and overcome together.
"Ethan," I said finally, testing the name against his small, sleeping face. "It means strong, enduring. Given everything he's already survived, even before actually being born—"
"Ethan," Evelyn repeated softly, something warm and grateful in her tired voice. "I love it."
I sat beside them, watching my son sleep peacefully against his mother's chest, feeling something profound and overwhelming settle into my own chest, understanding this exact moment represented exactly the kind of hope and healing we'd been fighting so desperately to actually achieve.
Twenty minutes later, everything shattered.
Alarms began blaring throughout the medical wing, sharp and urgent, and I felt my entire body go rigid with immediate, violent alarm, my wolf surging forward instantly at the sound.
"What's happening," Evelyn asked, her voice tight with sudden, sharp fear, instinctively pulling Ethan closer against her chest.
"I love you," I said, pressing a quick, desperate kiss against her forehead, then against Ethan's small, sleeping head. "I'll come back the moment this is resolved."
"We'll be here," she said, steady determination evident despite her obvious lingering fear.
I moved quickly, additional security already converging around the room as I left, understanding Callum had genuinely implemented every precaution we'd discussed, and made my way urgently toward the northern border, my wolf surging forward with violent, protective fury the entire journey.
I arrived to find genuine chaos—warriors engaged in fierce combat against the invading rogues, the sounds of snarling, violent struggle filling the previously quiet border territory, and I shifted immediately, my wolf taking over completely as I joined the fight.
I caught sight of Genevieve at the edge of the confrontation, directing the rogues with sharp, urgent gestures, and fury sharpened into something absolute and singular as I recognized her presence directly confirming Callum's report.
She'd orchestrated this. Deliberately, calculatedly, timing this attack for exactly the moment our family would be most vulnerable, most distracted by the genuine joy of Ethan's birth.
I moved through the chaos with focused, violent purpose, my wolf's strength and fury both driving me toward her position, understanding with absolute clarity that this needed to end now, permanently, regardless of whatever it required.
