Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 166

"Evelyn," I called out, my voice tight with sudden, sharp tension.

She appeared quickly, alarm evident in her expression at whatever she registered in my own tense posture. "What's happened?"

I showed her the message, watching her expression shift through the same disbelief and alarm I'd just experienced.

"Who sent this," she asked, studying the screen carefully.

"I don't know," I admitted. "Encrypted, no identifying information. But Evelyn, this could be from whoever helped Genevieve escape originally. Someone with genuine, insider knowledge about whatever actually happened all those years ago."

"Or it could be another manipulation," Evelyn said carefully. "Someone trying to continue destabilizing our family even now, using Genevieve's original claims as leverage for whatever additional agenda they're pursuing."

I considered that, understanding the genuine, complicated uncertainty of trying to actually determine this message's credibility. "I need to show this to Callum, to my father. If there's genuine information here, we need to actually investigate it properly."

Evelyn nodded, though I could see her own conflicted feelings evident beneath her careful composure. "I thought you were finally ready to let this go."

"I was," I said honestly. "But this feels different, Evelyn. Specific details, a name, a location. That's considerably more substantial than Genevieve's fragmented, unstable ramblings alone."

She considered that, understanding the genuine shift this message represented. "What if this leads somewhere real? What if there genuinely is a sibling out there, someone who's spent twenty-three years completely unaware of who her actual father is?"

"Then we'll figure out how to handle that, exactly like everything else we've navigated together," I said, though genuine uncertainty churned beneath my attempted confidence.

I called Callum immediately, relaying the message, watching him process the same complicated mixture of surprise and cautious urgency I'd experienced myself.

"I'll begin investigating immediately," he confirmed. "The name, the location, everything specified in that message. If this genuinely represents accurate information, we should be able to verify it relatively quickly."

"What about tracing the message itself," I asked. "Understanding who actually sent it?"

"I agree," I said. "Callum's already beginning investigation."

"I want to be involved directly," my father said, something firm and determined entering his voice despite the late hour and obvious surprise this message had caused. "If there's genuine possibility I have another child out there, unaware of her actual heritage, I need to actually understand that properly, regardless of how complicated or uncomfortable the truth ultimately proves."

I agreed, understanding his genuine need to personally engage with whatever this investigation might actually reveal, and we ended the call with plans to reconvene formally the following morning, once Callum had gathered whatever initial information he could actually verify.

I sat back down at the kitchen table afterward, staring at the encrypted message still displayed on my phone, understanding we'd just been pulled back into exactly the uncertain, complicated territory I'd genuinely hoped we'd finally moved past.

"Whatever this actually reveals," Evelyn said softly, settling beside me, "we'll navigate it together. Exactly like everything else."

I nodded, pulling her close, understanding the genuine truth in her steady reassurance even as fresh uncertainty now stretched ahead of us, wondering whether this unexpected message might finally provide the answers we'd been searching for, or whether it represented simply another layer of manipulation and uncertainty in this already exhausting, complicated journey.
