Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 203

Damon pov

I made my way home late that evening, exhausted from the day's emotional weight of helping settle Aiden into proper medical care, coordinating with Miriam about his ongoing needs, and working through additional logistics regarding potential resources for his continued healing.

I hadn't expected to find my parents in our living room when I finally arrived, but there they were, settled together on the couch, my mother curled against my father's side, both of them apparently deep in quiet, comfortable conversation.

I paused in the doorway, unwilling to immediately interrupt whatever genuine, tender moment I was witnessing.

My father had his arm wrapped around my mother, something I hadn't seen him do with such easy, natural affection in longer than I could properly remember, and as I watched, I caught the unmistakable glint of tears in his eyes, his expression carrying genuine, overwhelming emotion despite his obvious attempt at maintaining composure.

"I keep thinking about everything," he was saying quietly, his voice thick with emotion, "about how close I came to losing all of this. You, this family, the genuine chance to actually rebuild what I nearly destroyed through my own selfishness and poor choices."

"You didn't lose it," my mother said softly, her hand resting gently against his chest. "We're here, Robert. Together, genuinely rebuilding something real."

"I don't deserve this kind of second chance," he said, his voice breaking slightly. "After everything I put you through, thirty years of failing to actually see you properly, and now, somehow, we're actually here, together, genuinely happier than I think I've ever managed to feel in my entire life."

My mother pressed a gentle kiss against his cheek, tears visible in her own eyes now. "We both deserve this, Robert. We've both worked incredibly hard to actually reach this point, genuine healing rather than simply pretending everything's fine."

I felt something warm and profound settle into my own chest, watching this genuine, tender exchange between my parents, understanding exactly how far they'd traveled together throughout this exhausting, transformative journey.

I stepped forward finally, unable to remain simply observing without acknowledging my presence, and both of them looked up, matching warmth crossing their expressions at the sight of me.

"Damon," my mother said softly, gesturing me forward. "Come sit with us."

"We were just discussing everything we've survived together," my mother added softly. "Not just these past several months, but genuinely, our entire relationship. How thoroughly it's transformed, how genuinely different your father's become compared to who he was even a year ago."

"I'm different," my father confirmed, something quietly resolved in his voice. "We're all different, actually, given everything we've navigated together as a family. Genuine transformation, born from surviving genuine adversity together rather than simply avoiding difficulty."

I considered that, understanding the genuine truth in his observation. "I think that's accurate," I said slowly. "I know I'm different too, compared to who I was when Evelyn first left. More patient, genuinely committed to actual accountability rather than simply performing whatever seemed convenient."

"You've become genuinely remarkable," my father said, something proud and grateful evident in his tired expression. "Watching you navigate everything—Genevieve, my own health crises, the entire situation with Nadia and Marcus, now helping Miriam's community—I'm genuinely proud of the man you've become, Damon."

I felt genuine warmth at that acknowledgment, appreciating the significance of his continued confidence and pride despite everything difficult our family had survived.
