Damon pov
I watched from the porch as Ethan leaned against the fence near the training grounds, talking animatedly with yet another young she-wolf whose name I didn't even recognize, his easy laugh carrying across the yard, his whole posture radiating that same effortless, magnetic charm that had apparently caused so much genuine heartbreak these past several years.
I let out a long, tired sigh, watching the girl laugh at whatever he'd just said, her expression carrying the same hopeful, captivated warmth I'd witnessed so many times before from so many different young women.
"Another one," Evelyn said, settling beside me, following my gaze toward the same scene.
"I don't even know her name," I admitted, genuine weariness evident in my voice. "How many does that make now?"
"I've genuinely lost count," Evelyn said, something tired but resigned in her tone. "Though I recognize the pattern well enough by now. He'll pursue her intensely for a few weeks, tell her she's different, genuinely special, and then—"
"And then he'll simply lose interest," I finished, watching Ethan's charming smile with growing frustration. "Move on to whoever captures his attention next."
We watched together for a while longer, the girl's obvious delight at whatever attention Ethan was currently offering her, and I felt something heavy settle into my chest, understanding exactly how this particular story would likely unfold—weeks of apparent genuine connection, followed by inevitable, careless disappointment.
"He genuinely looks happy," Evelyn observed quietly, something complicated in her voice. "In those moments, pursuing someone new, he genuinely seems content."
"That's precisely what concerns me," I said. "It's not genuine happiness born from real connection, Evelyn. It's simply the thrill of pursuit, the temporary satisfaction of successfully charming someone new. That's not sustainable, not genuine."
She nodded, understanding my point despite her obvious continued affection for our son regardless of his troubling pattern.
"I keep hoping," I said quietly, watching Ethan's continued animated conversation, "that when he genuinely finds his mate, everything shifts. That this pattern of superficial pursuit and casual discard finally stops, replaced by genuine, lasting devotion."
