Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 218

"It is different," I said, though my voice carried considerably less conviction than I wanted, understanding exactly how hollow that claim sounded given everything currently unfolding.

"How," she demanded. "Show me genuine evidence, Ethan, beyond simply your own assertion that this connection feels different than whatever you apparently told each of these other women."

I opened my mouth, intending to actually offer something substantive, and found myself genuinely at a loss, understanding I possessed nothing beyond my own internal conviction, nothing external or demonstrable that might actually prove my claims to her satisfaction.

"That's what I thought," she said quietly, something resigned and disappointed replacing her earlier sharp fury. "I need space, Ethan. Genuine space to actually process everything I've witnessed and heard today, without you continuing to insist your intentions are somehow different despite considerable evidence suggesting otherwise."

She turned and walked away before I could offer any further response, and I stood there, watching her disappear back toward the guest quarters, understanding with genuine, devastating clarity exactly how thoroughly my own previous carelessness had now potentially cost me whatever chance I might have had at genuinely pursuing this significant, unprecedented connection.

I made my way back toward my own quarters, finding my parents both present, having apparently heard something about the confrontation given their immediate, concerned attention as I entered.

"What happened," my father asked, watching my obviously devastated expression.

I explained everything—Priya's conversation, the gathered women, Nadia's justified fury and subsequent request for space—and watched my parents' expressions shift through matching understanding and quiet, sympathetic concern.

"This is genuinely difficult," my mother said gently, once I'd finished. "But Ethan, you understand why this happened, don't you? Why she reacted with such genuine, complete distrust?"

"Because I've spent years actually earning exactly this kind of reputation," I said quietly, genuine self-recognition finally settling fully into place. "Because every single warning you've offered these past several years, every genuine concern about the harm I was apparently causing, was accurate and justified."
