"I don't actually care how it looks," I said honestly. "I care that you're genuinely safe."
Something shifted subtly in her expression, careful consideration replacing her earlier guarded hostility, though genuine skepticism remained present regardless.
"That's a single data point," she said quietly, though something less sharp entered her tone now. "One instance of genuine, immediate protective instinct doesn't automatically erase years of documented, careless behavior toward multiple other women."
"I understand that," I said. "I'm not expecting it to. I just—" I paused, considering how to actually articulate what I genuinely wanted to express. "I understand now, more clearly than I've perhaps ever managed before, exactly how much genuine harm my previous carelessness has caused. Not just to you, but to Priya, to Danielle, to Sera, to everyone I've ever treated with that same casual disregard."
"That's meaningful," Nadia said carefully. "Genuine recognition of harm caused, rather than simply defensive dismissal."
"My mother said something similar," I admitted. "That genuine transformation requires me to actually choose accountability consistently, regardless of whether that choice produces immediate reward or acknowledgment."
Something in Nadia's expression softened slightly further at that acknowledgment. "Your mother sounds genuinely wise."
"She is," I confirmed. "She's survived considerable difficulty herself, actually. My grandfather caused genuine, significant harm throughout years of similarly careless behavior, before eventually demonstrating authentic transformation."
"And she eventually forgave him?" Nadia asked, something genuinely curious entering her tone now.
"Eventually," I confirmed. "Though it took considerable time, sustained demonstration of genuine change rather than simply words or apologies."
Nadia nodded slowly, processing that information with obvious, careful consideration. "I appreciate you telling me that," she said finally. "It doesn't automatically change my genuine caution regarding your own claims, but it does provide some context for understanding what actual, sustained transformation genuinely requires."
