Nadia pov
I woke to the sound of shattering glass, my whole body jerking upright before I'd even fully processed what had actually happened.
The room was already filling with smoke.
I registered the fire almost immediately after, flames climbing rapidly across the far wall where something had clearly been thrown through the window—a bottle, I realized distantly, some kind of accelerant already spreading with terrifying speed across the wooden floor.
My heart slammed hard against my ribs, adrenaline flooding through my system as I scrambled off the bed, coughing already as smoke thickened the air.
I moved toward the door, my hand finding the handle, and yanked hard.
It didn't budge.
I tried again, throwing my full weight against it, understanding with rising, genuine panic that something had apparently jammed or blocked it from the outside.
"Help!" I shouted, my voice already rasping from the smoke filling my lungs. "Someone, please!"
The flames were spreading faster now, climbing toward the ceiling, and I felt genuine terror clawing through my chest as I understood exactly how quickly this situation was deteriorating.
I moved toward the window instead, understanding the door represented a genuine dead end, and found the frame already partially damaged from whatever had been thrown through it, glass scattered dangerously across the sill.
I grabbed the nearby chair without hesitation, using it to clear away the remaining shards before attempting to actually climb through, smoke stinging my eyes and throat with increasing intensity.
I'd barely gotten one leg over the sill when I heard voices outside, urgent and alarmed, and moments later, strong hands were suddenly there, helping pull me the rest of the way through.
"Nadia!"
Ethan's voice, sharp with genuine terror, and I found myself collapsing against him the moment I'd cleared the window entirely, my lungs burning, my entire body shaking with adrenaline and residual shock.
"I've got you," he said, his voice rough with obvious fear even as he carried me quickly away from the burning building, additional warriors already converging on the scene with buckets and formal fire-suppression equipment.
