Ethan pov
I'd finally allowed my eyes to close, exhaustion from the entire terrifying night pulling me toward reluctant, uneasy sleep despite my determination to remain vigilant, when Nadia's scream tore through the quiet room.
I was on my feet instantly, every instinct firing before I'd even fully processed conscious thought, and found her thrashing against the sheets, her eyes still closed, her voice carrying raw, genuine terror as she called out.
"Ethan!"
The sound of my own name breaking from her lips in such desperate, frightened panic sent something cold and immediate crashing through my chest, and I moved to her side without hesitation, gathering her carefully against me.
"I'm here," I said, my voice carrying whatever steady reassurance I could actually manage despite my own residual fear. "Nadia, I'm here. You're safe."
She continued fighting against whatever nightmare still held her, coughing violently now, her lungs apparently still processing residual smoke damage even as she remained trapped within her own terrified subconscious.
"The door," she gasped, still not fully conscious, her voice raw and desperate. "It won't open, I can't—Ethan, help me—"
"You're safe," I repeated firmly, holding her closer, understanding she was still trapped somewhere between sleep and the genuine terror of tonight's actual events. "The fire's out. You escaped, Nadia. You're genuinely safe now."
Her eyes finally opened, wild and unfocused for several long, agonizing seconds before actual recognition began settling in, her breathing still ragged and interspersed with fresh, painful coughing.
"Ethan," she said again, though this time her voice carried genuine, conscious relief rather than desperate, unconscious terror.
"I'm here," I confirmed, continuing to hold her carefully, feeling her trembling violently against me despite my attempted reassurance. "I've got you."
