Ethan pov
We made our way toward my father's office once we'd both properly dressed, Nadia moving with careful, deliberate purpose despite the obvious lingering exhaustion still evident beneath her composed exterior.
I noticed the grim expressions before we'd even fully entered—several warriors positioned near my father's desk, their postures carrying the particular tension that immediately signaled something significant had genuinely shifted overnight.
"What's happened," I asked, watching my father's own expression carrying obvious, frustrated fury.
"They're gone," he said flatly. "All of them. The three women, their three brothers—vanished sometime during the night, apparently before Callum's team even completed their initial questioning."
Cold dread settled immediately into my chest. "How is that even possible? Given the additional security we'd already implemented following the attack?"
"They apparently coordinated their escape carefully," Callum said, stepping forward with obvious exhaustion evident in his tired expression. "Left through the western border, using knowledge of patrol rotation gaps that suggests genuine, advance planning."
"So this was entirely premeditated," Nadia said quietly, understanding dawning across her expression. "Not simply the attack itself, but their entire escape plan, prepared well before they actually executed the arson."
"That's our current assessment," my father confirmed grimly. "Which means, unfortunately, we no longer have direct access to question them regarding their actual involvement or motivation."
"What about the evidence you'd already collected," I asked, understanding the genuine significance of what Callum had mentioned earlier that morning. "The scent match near the accelerant?"
"Circumstantial," Callum admitted, frustration evident in his own tired voice. "Sufficient to suggest genuine suspicion, but without their actual presence for formal questioning or additional verification, we can't definitively confirm guilt beyond reasonable doubt."
I felt genuine fury building sharp and immediate at that admission, understanding exactly what this meant—the people responsible for nearly murdering Nadia had simply fled, escaping whatever formal justice this pack's council might have otherwise imposed.
"We need to pursue them immediately," I said firmly. "Send trackers, understand exactly where they've genuinely gone, ensure they actually face appropriate consequence."
