"You're genuinely soaked," I observed eventually, noticing properly for the first time exactly how thoroughly his clothes had absorbed the shower's continued spray.
"I don't genuinely care about that," he said, something almost amused crossing his expression despite the obvious seriousness of everything we'd just navigated together. "You needed me here, immediately. Whatever state my clothes ended up in genuinely doesn't matter compared to that."
Something warm settled into my chest despite my continued exhaustion, appreciating exactly how thoroughly he'd prioritized my genuine wellbeing over any practical consideration regarding his own comfort or dignity.
"Thank you," I said quietly, genuine gratitude evident in my unsteady voice. "For actually coming, for not simply allowing me to face that alone."
"Always," he confirmed, echoing the same absolute conviction he'd offered throughout every previous difficult moment we'd navigated together. "Whatever you need, Nadia, whenever you genuinely need it—I'm here."
We remained there together for a while longer, the water finally beginning to run cool, before he carefully helped me stand, wrapping me gently in a towel while making no move to actually address his own soaked clothing.
"Let's get you properly dry and warm," he said gently, guiding me toward the bedroom.
I settled onto the bed while he found dry clothes for both of us, and once I'd changed into something warm and comfortable, he joined me, pulling me close against his chest, his arms wrapping protectively around me.
"I keep thinking," I said quietly, my voice still carrying residual exhaustion, "about everything we discussed last night. Their message, their twisted justification for believing I deserve punishment for Genevieve's crimes."
"You don't deserve any of this," Ethan said firmly. "Regardless of whatever twisted logic they've constructed."
"I know that," I said, though genuine uncertainty remained beneath my attempted conviction. "But Ethan, sometimes it's genuinely difficult separating what I intellectually understand from what I actually feel, especially after experiencing something like what just happened in the shower."
