The bathroom was bigger than I expected, with a deep tub and a shower, thick white towels folded on a shelf, and a little basket of soaps that smelled like lavender. I turned the water on as hot as it would go and stood under it until my skin turned red and the mud ran off in brown streams down the drain.

My hands were shaking when I washed my hair. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the flat-faced man in the sedan, and I opened them again fast.

When I stepped out, wrapped in a towel that felt like a cloud, I realized I had nothing to put on. I looked at the clothes I'd arrived in, a crumpled heap on the tile, and wrinkled my nose.

A soft knock sounded on the bedroom door.

I froze.

"Marissa?" Ethan's voice came muffled through the wood, low and careful. "It's Ethan. I'm going to leave some things on the floor outside. I'll knock once more when I'm gone, and then I'm walking downstairs. You can wait as long as you want before you open it."

I didn't answer right away. My heart was pounding.

"Okay," I called back, my voice smaller than I wanted. "Thank you."

"Take your time."

I listened to his footsteps go, heavy, then fading. A moment later there was another single knock, farther down the hall, and then nothing but the sound of rain.

I counted to sixty before I opened the door.

A tray sat on the floor. There was a bowl of soup, still steaming, with chunks of chicken and vegetables, a thick piece of buttered bread, an apple, and a mug of something that smelled like hot chocolate. Next to it was a folded stack of clothes, soft gray sweatpants, a long-sleeved shirt, thick socks, and a hoodie that was obviously his, with *CROSS PACK ATHLETICS* faded across the chest.

On top of the stack was a small folded note.

I picked it up, read it twice, and pressed it flat against my chest.
