CHAPTER 92-1

Clara’s POV

I spun around, my heart hammering in my chest. The voice belonged to Derek, one of the senior warriors who had been working nearby.

But Derek wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at something behind me with wide, alarmed eyes.

I turned to see what had caught his attention, and my blood went cold.

There was a young pack member, probably around eighteen years old, completely wrapped up in rope. The training rope I had been working with was wound around his arms, chest, and legs so tightly that he could barely move.

His eyes were wide with panic, and he was struggling against the bindings like a trapped animal.

What the hell?I breathed, staring at the scene in shock.

How had this happened? I had been tying knots on the training mat, muttering to myself about Killian. I hadn’t even noticed the kid approaching.

But somehow, while I was lost in my thoughts and cursing under my breath, I had managed to trap

him with the rope. I must have been moving around him in circles, wrapping him up without even

realizing it.

Clara, what did you do?Derek demanded, rushing over to help the trapped pack member.

II don’t know,I stammered, my hands shaking as I reached for the rope. I was just working and

The young man was starting to panic more, his breathing becoming rapid and shallow. The rope was tight enough to restrict his movement but not tight enough to hurt him seriously. Still, being trapped like that would terrify anyone.

Hold still,I told him, my fingers fumbling with the complex knots I had somehow created. I’ll get

you out.

But the knots were incredibly tight and complicated. In my distracted state, I had somehow managed to create a mess of rope that would take several minutes to untangle.

Derek pulled out a knife and began carefully cutting through some of the outer loops. How did this even happen?

I don’t know,I repeated, feeling my face burn with embarrassment. I was focused on the mat and I guess I didn’t notice

Other pack members had started to gather around, drawn by Derek’s shout and the commotion.’I could see them whispering to each other, pointing at the strange scene.

The young man finally broke free as Derek cut through the last of the rope. He stumbled backward, rubbing his arms where the rope had been tight against his skin.

Are you hurt?I asked quickly, moving toward him.

He shook his head, but his eyes were still wide with confusion and a little fear. No, I’m okay. But what just happened?

I’m sorry,I said, my voice coming out smaller than I intended. I was distracted and I didn’t see you there.

Derek was staring at me with concern. Clara, you wrapped him up like a present. How do you not notice doing something like that?

I opened my mouth to explain, but how could I tell them that I had been so lost in thoughts about Killian that I had essentially gone on autopilot?

I was thinking about something else,” I said lamely.

Something else?Derek repeated. Clara, you could have seriously hurt him if you had pulled those

ropes any tighter.

The weight of what I had done began to sink in. I could have actually injured a pack member

because I couldn’t keep my mind focused on my work.

All because I couldn’t stop thinking about Killian.

I’m really sorry,I said to the young man again. Are you sure you’re not hurt?

I’m fine,he assured me, though he took a few steps away from me. Just confused.

The crowd that had gathered was still murmuring among themselves. I could hear fragments of

their conversations.

How does someone not notice wrapping up another person?

She was muttering something the whole time.

Looked like she was in a trance or something.

My face felt like it was on fire. This was exactly the kind of attention I didn’t want or need.

Derek dismissed the crowd, telling everyone to get back to work. The young man I had accidentally trapped wandered off, still rubbing his arms and shooting confused glances back at

Clara,Derek said once we were relatively alone again. Are you alright? You seemoff today.”

I’m fine,I said quickly. Just tired from all the cleanup work.

Derek didn’t look convinced. Maybe you should take a break. Go get some rest.

I wanted to argue, but after what had just happened, I knew he was right. I clearly wasn’t safe to be around other people when I was this distracted.

Yeah, okay,I agreed reluctantly.

I gathered up the remaining rope and put the training equipment away, trying to ignore the curious stares I was still getting from some pack members.

As I was finishing up, Xander appeared at my side.

Clara,” he said formally. Alpha Darius wants to see you in his office.

My stomach dropped. Of course he did. Word of what had just happened had probably already reached him.

Now?I asked, though I already knew the answer.

Now,Xander confirmed.

I followed Xander through the packhouse, feeling like I was walking to my own execution. The last thing I wanted was to have to explain to Darius why I had been so distracted that I had accidentally

tied up a pack member.

Especially when the reason for my distraction was something I couldn’t tell him about.

We reached Darius’s office, and Xander knocked on the door.

Enter,came Darius’s voice from inside.

Xander opened the door and gestured for me to go in. Alpha, Clara is here as requested.

Thank you, Xander. You can go.

Xander nodded and left, closing the door behind him. I was alone with Darius, who was sitting behind his desk looking at me with an unreadable expression.

Sit,he said, gesturing to the chair across from his desk.

I sat down, keeping my hands folded in my lap and trying to look calmer than I felt.

Darius studied me for a long moment before speaking.

I heard about what happened during training today,he said finally.

It was an accident,” I said quickly. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

But you did hurt someone,Darius pointed out. Not physically, but you scared that kid pretty badly.

I looked down at my hands. I know. I’m sorry.

Sorry doesn’t fix the problem, Clara. What happened today was dangerous. You could have seriously injured someone.

I know,I repeated quietly.

Do you?Darius asked, his voice getting sharper. Because this isn’t like you. You’re one of the most focused fighters I know. You don’t make mistakes like this.

I could feel his eyes on me, studying my face for any sign of what was really going on.

So I’m going to ask you again,he continued. What’s wrong? What’s got you so distracted that you’re accidentally tying up pack members?

I kept my eyes fixed on my hands, not trusting myself to look at him. If I met his gaze, he would see

right through me.
