CHAPTER 19-2
“Oh!” Kira stopped suddenly, slapping her forehead. “I completely forgot. I was supposed to deliver these files to Alpha Darius this morning.” She pulled a leather folder from her bag, looking genuinely distressed.
“Can’t it wait?” I asked.
“It’s the border patrol reports. He reviews them daily.” She bit her lip. “And I promised Beta Xander I’d have them on his desk before noon.”
“I can take them to him later,” Nora offered.
“No,” Kira said, shaking her head. “I just got an emergency call from the med bay. Training accident.” She looked at me hopefully. “Clara, would you mind? You’re not scheduled for anything right now, are you?”
I stared at the folder like it might bite me. The thought of facing Darius again so soon after what happened at the training field made my stomach flip. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Please?” Kira’s eyes were pleading. “I’m already late for the med bay, and you know where his
office is now.”
“Can’t Marcus or Eli do it?” I tried.
“They both have patrol rotation in ten minutes,” she said, glancing at the clock on the wall. “Please, Clara? It’ll take you five minutes, tops. Just drop them off and leave.”
I hesitated, but the desperation in her voice was hard to ignore. “Fine,” I said reluctantly, taking the folder. It felt heavy in my hands. “But you owe me.”
Relief washed over her face. “You’re the best! Second floor, east wing, end of the hall. Just knock and leave them on his desk if he’s not there.” She was already backing away. “I’ve got to run. Two wolves with broken bones waiting for me!”
Before I could change my mind, she was gone, leaving me standing alone in the corridor with the folder. I took a deep breath and headed for the east wing, rehearsing what I’d say when I
saw Darius again.
“Here are your files, Alpha. Kira asked me to deliver them.”
Simple. Direct. Professional.
The hallway leading to his office was quieter than the rest of the house, the dark wood paneling making it feel more formal. When I reached the imposing double doors, I hesitated,

then knocked firmly.
No answer.
“Alpha Darius?” I called, just to be sure. “I have some files for you.”
Still nothing.
I knocked again, louder this time, listening carefully. Silence.
“Thank the goddess,” I muttered, relieved he wasn’t there.

I tried the handle, surprised when it turned easily in my grip. The door swung open silently, revealing a spacious office bathed in shadow.
Heavy curtains were drawn across the windows, blocking most of the daylight. Even in the dimness, I could make out the massive desk dominating the center of the room, the walls lined with maps and weapons that gleamed dully in the low light.
The space itself seemed to radiate power. Every object, every arrangement, spoke of careful consideration and authority. It was a room designed to intimidate, to remind visitors exactly who they were dealing with.
I stepped inside, planning to just leave the folder on his desk, when I heard someone clear their throat behind me.
Startled, I spun around too quickly, my foot catching on the edge of a plush rug. I stumbled, arms flailing for balance as I pitched forward.
Instead of hitting the floor, I crashed into something solid and warm. Strong hands gripped my upper arms, steadying me. I looked up, right into Alpha Darius’s amused face.
