CHAPTER 198

Clara’s POV

I was barely back in our room when I heard footsteps in the hallway. Soft, deliberate, familiar in a way that made my skin crawl. My heart started racing even before the knock came at the door.

“Clara.” Lucien’s voice was low, intimate, filled with an expectation that made my blood boil. “We need to finish what we started.”

I pressed my back against the door, trying to steady my breathing. After everything that had just happened with Darius, after seeing the devastation in his eyes when I confessed what I’d done, the last thing I needed was another confrontation with Lucien.

The man who had destroyed my relationship in a single night.

“Go away,” I called through the wood, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Open the door, Clara.”

There was something in his voice, a command, an expectation that I would obey like some well-trained

pet. It made my wolf stir restlessly, but it also made my human mind rebel against everything he

“I said go aw

Silence stretched between us, and for a moment I hoped he’d actually listened. Then I heard the sound of the door handle turning, and my heart sank. I’d forgotten to lock it in my rush to get inside.

Lucien stepped into the room, closing the door behind him with a soft click that sounded like a death sentence. He looked perfectly composed, like he hadn’t just destroyed my relationship with Darius an hour ago. Like he hadn’t turned my entire world upside down with his manipulative games.

“I told you to leave,” I said, backing away from him toward the center of the room.

“And I told you we weren’t finished.” His eyes swept over me, taking in my tear-stained face and defensive posture with what looked like satisfaction. “You’ve been crying.”

“Get out.”

“Did you tell him?” He stepped closer, moving with that predatory grace that all powerful Alphas seemed to possess. “Did you tell Darius about what happened between us?”

The way he said it, like it was some grand romance instead of a moment of weakness that had destroyed everything good in my life, made anger flare hot and bright in my chest.

“Yes, I told him. And now he hates me. Are you happy?”

“I’m sorry he was hurt,” Lucien said, though he didn’t sound particularly sorry. If anything, he sounded pleased. “But it was necessary. You needed to be free to explore what’s between us.”

There’s nothing between us.”

Liar.” He was close enough now that I could smell his scent, feel the heat radiating from his body. The same scent and heat that had overwhelmed me in the garden. “Your body knows the truth even if your mind won’t accept it.”

His hand came up to cup my face, and felt that same joit of electricity I’d experienced before. But this time, instead of giving in to it, instead of letting it control me, I let my anger take the wheel.

I grabbed his wrist with enough force to leave brutses and shoved his hand away from my face like it was something poisonous.

“Don’t touch me.”

“Clara…” He looked genuinely surprised by the violence of my reaction, like he’d expected me to melt into his arms again.

“I said don’t touch me!” My voice was sharp, furious, filled with all the rage and self-hatred that had been building since I’d walked away from Darius. “What the hell is wrong with you? Do you think you can just waltz in here and pick up where we left off? Do you think I’m some weak little female who can’t resist your

Alpha charm?”

He blinked, clearly taken aback by my fury. “I thought you wanted…”

“You thought wrong.” I stepped closer to him, my anger making me reckless, making me brave. “I don’t want you, Lucien. I don’t want your bloodline bullshit or your destiny crap or whatever twisted game you’re playing. I want you to fuck off and stop thinking with your dick.”

His eyes darkened, and I could see his Alpha pride bristling at my rejection. “You felt what I felt in that garden. You can’t deny…”

“I felt lust. That’s all. And you know what? I feel lust for chocolate cake too, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to marry it or let it destroy my life.”

“This is different…”

“No, it’s not. You’re just another Alpha who thinks he can take whatever he wants because of some imaginary claim.” I could see my words hitting their mark, could see the crack in his perfect composure. “Well, guess what? I’m taken. By a man who actually gives a damn about me, not just my bloodline or my power or whatever the hell you think you want from me.”

“Darius doesn’t understand what you are…”

“Darius understands that I’m a person, not a prize to be won or a power to be claimed. He sees me, not some fantasy mate you’ve built up in your head based on old bloodline bullshit.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened, and I could see his control starting to slip. Good. I wanted him angry. I wanted him to feel a fraction of what I was feeling.

“You’re making a mistake.”
