CHAPTER 220-2
“But it’s not just about us, I said, frustration bleeding into my mental voice. “It’s about them too. About their happiness, their needs, and their ability to accept sharing.”
“Then we make them understand,” my wolf said stubbornly “We show them that this could work.”
“And if they refuse?”
My wolf was quiet for a moment. “Then we choose the one who hurts us least by walking away.”
The conversation left me more confused than ever. My wolf’s certainty about wanting all four mates only confirmed what I’d been trying to deny. But reality was harsh, and not all desires could be fulfilled.
I sighed, feeling like the weight of the world was upon my shoulder
“One day left,” I whispered.
“One day to figure out how to keep our heart from breaking,” she replied sadly.
I was getting ready to head back to the pack house when I felt a familiar presence. I turned to see Lucien approaching through the trees, his dark eyes unreadable.
“Clara,” he said, his voice carrying that distinctive low rumble that never failed to affect me.
“Lucien,” I replied, suddenly very aware of how I must look after my intense workout, sweat–dampened and
disheveled.
“You’ve been avoiding me,” he observed, stopping a few feet away.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“About your choice.”
It wasn’t a question, and I didn’t treat it as one. “Yes.”
He studied my face for a long moment, those dark eyes seeming to see straight through to my soul.
“You look tormented,” he said quietly.
“I am,” I admitted, my voice breaking slightly. “I don’t know what to do, Lucien. Everyone wants something. different from me. Everyone has their reasons why I should choose them. And I just… I don’t know.”
“Then stop listening to everyone else,” Lucien said simply, moving closer. “You’ve spent all this time listening to what Darius wants, what Killian wants, what Ronan wants. You’ve been trying to weigh their arguments, consider their feelings, factor in their needs. But what about you, Clara? What do you want?”
“It’s not that simple-”
“It is that simple,” Lucien interrupted gently. “At the end of the day, you’re the one who has to live with this choice. Not them. You.”
CHAPITH
He reached up. his hand cupping my cheek. “So stop asking yourself what decision will make them happy, and start asking yourself what decision will make you happy. Follow your heart, Clara. That’s all you can
do.”
“I don’t think any decision will make me happy.” I whispered. “No matter who I choose, I lose the others.”
“Maybe,” Lucien acknowledged, his thumb brushing across my cheekbone. “But at least if you follow your heart, you’ll know you made the choice that was true to yourself.”
I searched his face, looking for some hint of judgment or expectation. But all I saw was genuine care.
“My heart wants things that aren’t possible,” I whispered.
Lucien’s expression softened. “Then maybe it’s time to redefine what’s possible.”
Before I could ask what he meant, he stepped back, his hand falling away from my face.
“You have less than a day left,” he said quietly. “Don’t waste it trying to please everyone else. Listen to your heart, Clara. Really listen. And then have the courage to act on what it tells you.”
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me alone by the lake with more questions swirling in my
mind and a rapidly approaching deadline that would change everything.
I sank back down onto the grass, my legs suddenly too weak to support me. Lucien’s words echoed in my head, mixing with my wolf’s earlier assertions.
Follow your heart.
