Clara’s POV

“A woman. And she had called out your name.”

Definitely Mira. It had to be. I couldn’t think of anyone else who’d be after me.

“What did she say?”

“She said she had told you she’d be back and now, she wanted to speak with you directly. Face to face.” Rachel paused. “She also said if you were brave enough to face her.”

A challenge. Mira was challenging me.

“It’s a trap,” Derek said immediately. “Don’t even consider it.”

“She wants to draw you out,” Lucien added. “Separate you from the pack.”

“Maybe,” I said. “Or maybe she genuinely wants to talk.”

“Clara-”

“I didn’t say I was going to do it.” I watched the figures moving between the trees. “But we can’t ignore this. They’re not leaving and I can see they’re settling down, waiting for something.”

“Probably waiting for tomorrow,” Lucien said. “When Darius returns and the pack is distracted by your confrontation with him.”

He was right. Mira was smart and knew tomorrow would be chaotic, making it the perfect time to strike.

“Then we don’t give her the chance.” I turned to Derek. “Double the patrols along this entire boundary. I want warriors posted every hundred yards. No one crosses into our territory without us knowing.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

“And send word to the pack. Everyone needs to be on alert. If Mira wants a fight, we’ll be ready for her.”

As Derek moved to carry out the orders, a figure emerged from the forest. Even at this distance, I recognized her.

Mira.

She walked right up to the boundary line and stopped. Her eyes found mine across the distance, and even from here, I could see the hatred burning in them.

She raised her voice, and it echoed across the clearing between us.

“Luna Clara! I know you’re there! I can smell your fear from here!”

My warriors tensed. Lucien put a hand on my arm, but i shook him off.

“Come out and face me!” Mira called. “Or are you too much of a coward? Too busy hiding behind your multiple mates to deal with the consequences of your actions?”

Several of my warriors looked at me, waiting to see how I’d respond.

“She’s baiting you,” Lucien warned quietly,

I knew that. But standing here, doing nothing, while Mira mocked me in front of my own warriors? That wasn’t an option either.

I stepped out from behind the rocks. Let her see me.

Mira’s smile was vicious. “There she is! The great Luna Clara! The woman who steals other people’s mates!”

“You’re on the edge of my territory, Mira,” I called back. “State your business or leave.”

“My business?” She laughed, and it echoed across the clearing. “My business is you. You took everything from me. My mate, my future, my dignity. And now I’m here to take everything from you.”

“Is that a declaration of war?”

“It’s a promise.” Mira’s expression hardened. “I challenge you, Luna or should I say, Alpha Clara. One on one. You and me. Tomorrow at sunset.”

A formal challenge. She was invoking the old laws, the ancient right of any wronged party to seek justice through combat.

“And if I refuse?” I asked.

“Then I’ll assume you’re as much of a coward as you are a whore,” Mira said. “And I’ll bring my warriors across that border and let them tear your pack apart while you hide like the weak, pathetic excuse for an Alpha that you are.”

The insult stung, but it was the threat to my pack that made my decision.

“Tomorrow at sunset,” I said. “I accept your challenge.”

Mira’s smile widened. “Good. I’ll see you then, Luna. Try not to die of guilt before I get the chance to kill you myself.”

She turned and walked back into the forest, disappearing among the trees.

The clearing fell silent.

“Clara,” Lucien said quietly. “Do you know what you just agreed to?”
