CHAPTER 41-1

Alpha DariusPOV

He pressed the advantage, backing her toward the edge of the ring. Clara’s defense was slipping. reactions slowing. Reid sensed victory, moved in for the finishing blow.

That was when Clara did something no one expected.

She charged him. A reckless, desperate move that flew in the face of everything she’d shown so far. It caught Reid offguard just long enough for her to duck under his guard and drive her shoulder into his midsection.

The impact should have bounced off him. Instead, Reid found himself lifted, carried backward by the surprising strength in her frame. His feet left the ground for a crucial secondjust long enough for Clara to hook his ankle and twist.

They went down together, a tangle of limbs and dust. When the cloud settled, Clara had somehow ended up on top, her forearm pressed to Reid’s throat, her weight pinning him despite his greater

size.

For a heartbeat, no one moved. No one breathed.

Then Reid tapped the ground twice. Yield.

The crowd erupted. Disbelief. Excitement. Argument. All of it washing over the ring in a wave of

sound.

I raised my hand for silence and got it. Stepped into the ring and stood over them both as Clara eased herself off Reid, offering a hand that he, after a moment’s hesitation, accepted.

Six challenges,” I said, letting my voice carry. Six victories.

I looked at Clara, standing there battered and exhausted but unbowed. Blood on her face, dirt on her skin, and something fierce and untamed in her eyes that called to the wolf in me.

What was the point of this?someone called from the crowd. Jarek, nursing his wounded pride. To humiliate your elite? To show us all up with somestray?

I turned to face him, face hardening. “The point was to show what strength really looks like. Not birthright. Not rank. Not years of service.” I gestured to Clara. This is what I want in my pack. Someone who fights not because they were born to it, but because they’ve had to claw for every inch. Someone who doesn’t quit when they’re outnumbered, outmatched.

I looked around at my elite, at the entire gathered pack. And if any of you can’t see the value in

that, then maybe you’re not who I thought you were.

Vex was the first to step forward. She inclined her head to Claraa warrior’s acknowledgment. Well fought,” she said simply.

Luka followed, then Dominic. Even Kai gave a grudging nod of respect. Reid, standing closest, studied Clara with new eyes.

You fight like someone who’s been hunted,he observed quietly.

Clara met his gaze evenly. I was.

Something passed between them thenunderstanding, perhaps. Or recognition of a shared truth.

I addressed the crowd again. The challenge is complete. Clara has earned her reward.I turned to her. What would you claim as your prize?

She looked at me, those impossibly blue eyes holding mine without flinching despite the bruises forming on her face. For a moment, I thought she might ask for something significanta position in the pack, a boon I couldn’t easily grant.

Instead, she said, A place to belong. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.

The simplicity of it struck me somewhere deep. I nodded, something tightening in my chest. It’s

yours.”

The crowd dispersed slowly, murmuring among themselves. My elites lingered, still processing

what had happened. I’d broken protocol, challenged tradition. Some would question it. Others

would understand eventually.

Clara stood in the center of the emptying ring, swaying slightly now that the adrenaline was fading. I moved toward her just as her knees buckled.

I caught her before she hit the ground, her weight nothing in my arms. She didn’t pass out, just couldn’t stand any longer. Up close, I could see the true toll the fights had takenthe mottled bruising already spreading across her ribs, the swelling at her jaw, the small cuts and abrasions

everywhere.

That was foolish,I told her, though there was no heat in the words. You could have stopped after three. You’d made your point.

She looked up at me, a ghost of a smile on her split lip. No. I couldn’t.

And I understood. She’d never stop at good enough. Never settle for partial victory. It wasn’t in her nature.

I carried her toward the pack house, aware of eyes following us, of whispers spreading already. Let them talk. Let them wonder. She’d earned this moment, this victory.

Did you know?she asked quietly, her voice hoarse from exertion. Did you know I could beat them all?

I considered lying, considered telling her I’d never doubted. But she deserved the truth.

I knew you could beat some of them. I hoped you could beat most.I glanced down at her. Beating all sixthat exceeded even my expectations.

Good, she murmured, satisfaction evident despite her exhaustion. I like surprising you.

Something warm bloomed in my chest, dangerous and unexpected. I pushed it down. She was a

pack member now, truly one of us. And after today, no one would question it.

Hours later, I sat in my office, a glass of whiskey in hand. The amber liquid caught the light as I

swirled it, thoughts turning over in my mind.

What Clara had done today was extraordinary. My elite weren’t just trained fighters. They were apex predators in human form. Each had been selected for natural talent and forged through years of brutal training. They’d earned their places through blood and pain.

And she’d beaten them all like it was nothing.

A shewolf with no pack, no lineage, no formal training that I knew of. Just raw determination and skills honed through necessity rather than discipline.

I reached for my phone, a smile playing at the corner of my mouth. This was too good not to share. Alpha Licien picked up on the third ring. Darius,” he greeted, his deep voice carrying that slight accent from his northern territory. What catastrophe brings you to actually use a phone?

I chuckled. No catastrophe. Not for me, anyway.

Intriguing,he said. Hold on, I’m adding Ronan to this. He’ll never forgive me if I get good gossip

without him.

There was a click, then Alpha Ronan’s voice joined the call. If this is about the border dispute with

the Silverclaw Pack, I already told them to go-

It’s not business,” Licien interrupted. Darius is being mysterious.

Now that is interesting,Ronan said. Speak, friend. What has you calling us both at this unholy hour?

I leaned back in my chair, savoring the moment. I’ve acquired something remarkable.

The last time you said that, it was a twohundredyearold bottle of scotch,” Licien said dryly. Which, I might add, you still haven’t shared.

This is better than scotch,I replied. This ispotential.

Now he’s being poetic,Ronan sighed dramatically. Out with it, Darius,

I took a sip of my whiskey, letting the suspense build. How would you both react if I told you!

found someone who could take on both of you in combatand win?

Silence. Then laughterfirst Ronan’s barking guffaw, then Licien’s quieter chuckle.

I haven’t been in that bad of shape lately,Ronan protested.

And I haven’t gotten that old yet,Licien added. Though I appreciate the ego check.

I smiled into my glass. I’m serious.

Who is it?Ronan asked, curiosity evident in his voice. One of your new elites? That massive brute you recruited from the southern packs last year?

No,I said. Someone new. Someoneunexpected.
