Chapter 121

Kael’s POV

Her hair was matted from sleep. She wore an oversized shirt I was pretty sure belonged to Dexter, her bare legs peeking out from beneath it., She was fucking gorgeous.

“Are you okay?” I croaked.

It was a stupid question. Of course, she wasn’t. But I had to ask.

She nodded. “Headache’s gone.”

“Good.”

Raven didn’t move. Not to leave. Not to come closer. And wasn’t that a metaphor for where we stood? Hovering on the threshold of what we

both wanted.

“Do you need something?” I rasped.

She bit her bottom lip, making my jeans suddenly feel two sizes tighter. She released that hold and let out a breath, stepping inside. “I wanted to see how you were doing.”

I stared at the beautiful woman in front of me-so raw and real and everything I’d ever wanted. Holding our cards close to our chests had done nothing but hurt us. So, I decided to give her my brutal truth. No self-protection, no shielding, just me.

“Not good,” I croaked. “I miss you. I’m fucking terrified that something’s going to happen to you, and it’ll all be my fault. I’m scared you’ll never forgive me. I’m worried I can’t be the leader my pack needs me to be.”

I sucked in a sharp breath. “And having Michael in Duston has all these memories of my sister flooding me. It’s killing me. And knowing that he hurt you, too? I want to rip him limb from limb. I’m a wreck, Raven. A shattered mess. And I don’t want anyone to know.”

Raven’s POV

I stared at the man behind the desk. Some part of my brain recognized him as Kael, but it was as if he’d completely changed in front of my eyes. Kael had always been reserved, never sharing too much. So, who was this stranger laying himself bare before me now?

ལྷ་འཚོ་འཇོ་ཇ་

It wasn’t easy for an alpha to admit weakness. It was in their DNA to show no mercy and know that every tiny fracture in their façades could be manipulated in battle and lead to their demise.

What Kael had just done was the equivalent of baring his neck to me. It was a sign of submission and complete trust. And it knocked me sideways.

My breaths came quicker as I took one step and then another, walking toward the man who’d just given me the ultimate gift. I had no idea what to give him in return; I only knew I needed to be closer to do it. When I reached the massive man, I stopped just in front of him, so close I had to step between his legs.

Kael stared up at me, evident pain and wonder in his gorgeous pale-blue eyes. But he made no move to touch me and didn’t ask for anything.

So, I touched him.

My hands lifted and embraced his head, his face pressed against my chest. I rubbed the back side of his head slowly in circles. Kael let out a sound that resembled a purr-deeper than Lulu’s, but the quality was the same,

My hands moved to massage his neck, and that purr morphed into a soft growl.
