Chapter 15
Raven’s POV
Kael’s phone buzzed sharply on the desk just as Marty shouldered through the office door, carrying a stack of paperwork that looked like it had been through a war.
“Boss, the contracts-” Marty started, then paused when he saw me perched on the desk, ice pack still pressed to my face. His eyebrows shot up, but he wisely didn’t comment.
Kael glanced at his phone, jaw tightening at whatever he saw on the screen. “Take over for me,” he ordered Marty, then turned to me. “Keep the
ice on. Don’t move.”
I smirked. “Wow. Bossy.”
Marty snorted, setting the files down. “You have no idea, sister.”
Kael shot him a look that could’ve melted steel before striding out, the door clicking shut behind him with an ominous finality.
The second he was gone, I turned to Marty. “So. That’s the infamous boss you’re always talking about? He founded this place?”
Marty leaned against the filing cabinet, arms crossed. “Yep. Built it from the ground up. Him and his brothers.”
Brothers.
That word sent a prickle down my spine. Pack. It had to be.
And Kael was probably the pack’s Alpha.
Which meant his “brothers” were wolves too.
I kept my voice light. “Brothers, huh? They all in the fight club business too?”
Marty chuckled. “Nah. They do security. High-end stuff. Private contracts, asset protection-you know, the kind of work that pays real nice.”
Fuck.
My fingers tightened around the ice pack. Security. A polite word for mercenary. For hunters.
The office suddenly felt too small, the walls closing in. I needed to get out. Needed to grab my bag, get to my truck, and put as many miles between me and this town as possible-
The door swung open.
Kael stepped back in, his presence filling the room like a thunderclap. In one hand, he held a glass of water. In the other, a small pill bottle.
offered, shaking out two white tablets.
em like they were live grenades.
y survival instinct I had screamed at once.
“No thanks,” I said lightly, swinging my legs off the desk. “Pal, I know better than to take mystery white little pills from a guy I just met five minuets ago. No offense.”

Kael’s eyes flashed-something dark and unreadable moving behind them.
He set the bottle aside and shrugged. “Non taken.”
1 eyed him for a brief moment, then heading for the door. “Thanks for the ice. I’ll see myself out.”
Kael’s expression shifted into something so genuinely concerned it made my teeth ache. His brow furrowed, light blue eyes scanning me like he could physically will me into accepting his help.
“Where are you headed?” he asked, voice low and steady.
I crossed my arms. “My bedroom, like a intelligent human being. It’s the middle of the damn night.”
His jaw tightened. “You’re in no state to drive,”
“I walked here,” I lied through my teeth.
That did it. His entire demeanor shifted-shoulders tensing, gaze sharpening like I’d just announced I was about to jog on mine field. “Alone? At
this hour?”
Lena, the traitor, practically whined at the protective edge in his voice. I mentally kicked her.
Marty, leaning against the filing cabinet with the world’s most obnoxious smirk, decided to chime in. “Boss has a point. Saw some shady types
against
lurking near the rail yard last week.”
Kael shot him a look that clearly said not helping, but Marty just grinned wider, like watching his stone-cold Alpha turn into a worried mother hen was the best entertainment he’d had all year.
I rolled my eyes. “I can handle myself.”
“I know.” Kael said, so damn earnest it made my skin prickle. “But let me walk you anyway.”
There it was again-that tone. Not an order, not even a request. A offer. Like he genuinely couldn’t stand the thought of me stepping foot outside alone while slightly banged up.
Lena was practically doing backflips in my head. “Yes! Walk! Bond! Sniff him!”
I ignored her. Ignored the way Kael’s scent-winter pine and something darker, smokier-wrapped around me. Ignored the way my pulse jumped when he grabbed his leather jacket off the hook, shoulders stretching the fabric of his shirt in a way that should’ve been illegal.
“Tine,” I muttered. “But if you try any knight-in-shining armor crap, I’m kneeing you in the dick.”
Kael’s lips twitched. “Noted.”
Marty fake coughed into his fist. “Jesus, boss.”
I flipped him off on my way out the door, Kael falling into step beside me-close enough that our arms occasionally brushed, far enough to give me space. The tension between us crackled like live wire, equal parts thrilling and terrifying.
And as we sted into the cool night air, one thought circled my mind like a vulture:
eest or worst decision of my life.
