Chapter 17

Raven’s POV

“Maybe I’ll surprise you.”

Yeah, not gonna happen.

That earned me half a grin, the kind that suggested he enjoyed being challenged. As the door closed between us, I engaged every lock with military precision, then pressed my ear against the wood. Only when his footsteps faded down the stairs did I allow myself to sink to the floor,

the business card crumpling in my clenched fist.

The emptiness of my apartment yawned behind me, a living thing. Tonight’s unwanted emotions pooled in my chest – not just wariness, but something sharper, more complicated. Something that felt dangerously like longing.

I exhaled slowly, pressing my palms to my eyes. This was why I never stayed anywhere long enough for the lights to start feeling like home.

Kael’s POV

That poor door wouldn’t stop a determined house cat, let alone an Alpha. Yet I respected its existence because she thinks it means safe. My wolf disagreed violently.

Krux paced beneath my skin, claws raking my insides. Ours. Protect. Claim. The intensity of his need shocked me. Normally he’d be satisfied with a casual hunt, a fleeting chase. This? This was primal. Territorial. The kind of bone-deep possession that carved itself into a wolf’s soul.

I flexed my hands, still warm from where they’d nearly touched her. The human part of me wasn’t faring much better. I wanted to bury my face in the curve where her neck met shoulder, drink in that sage-and-breeze scent until it lived in my lungs. My canines ached with the need to mark, to brand.

This was dangerous.

One more second outside her door and I’d either break it down or curl up on her welcome mat like some lovesick stray. Neither option would

earn me points with a woman who carried survival instincts sharper than my claws.

I forced myself backward, each step away from her like pulling teeth. The absence of a mating spark should’ve been a relief – no visions of

shared futures, no electric recognition. Just… this relentless hunger.

At the stairwell, I thumbed open my phone. Nox would have answers. The pack link hummed in my mind, but I resisted the impulse to use it. Some betrayals of privacy require actual words.

>> Need a deep dive. Raven from Jack’s Bar.

The reply came before I reached the bottom step:

<< On it.

<< She bite you or something?

te myself. If only he knew.

air did nothing to clear her scent from my clothes. Every inhale brought sage and something uniquely her, making Krux whine like a denied supper.

The empty club echoed with my footsteps when an unexpected sound gave me pause-the rustle of papers and muttered curses drifting from the office down the hall. My muscles coiled instinctively before the familiar bergamot-and-gunpowder scent registered.

Chapter 17

Of course.

I shouldered through the door to find Dexter knee-deep in what appeared to be the aftermath of a paperwork tornado. My second-in-command sat buried beneath precarious stacks of files, his tattooed arms barely visible beneath the chaos. The sight would’ve been concerning if I didn’t

know this was Dexter’s natural state of being.

“You’re back early,” I remarked, leaning against the doorframe.

Dexter didn’t look up from the disaster zone. “Missed the ambiance,” he deadpanned, British accent sharpening the sarcasm. A lock of blond hair fell across his forehead as he unearthed what might have been a tax document-or possibly a grocery list.

I crossed my arms. “You do realize most people use filing cabinets?”

“This,” he said, waving a hand over the apocalyptic mess, “is a highly sophisticated organizational system.”

“Looks like a recycling bin threw up.”

Dexter finally glanced up, green eyes glinting with mischief. “Says the man lurking around his own club at three AM.” His gaze sharpened. “Why

are you here, Kael?”

The question hung between us. Normally I’d brush it off, but Dexter had a sixth sense for bullshit-one of the reasons he made such an effective

Beta.

“One of the fighters took a bad hit,” I admitted. “Wanted to make sure she got home safe.”

Dexter’s eyebrows climbed toward his hairline. “Since when do you play chaperone?”

“Since she lives above your goddamn bar.”

That got his attention. The pen in his hand stilled. “Wait-the new bartender? Joe mentioned something about renting the flat…” He snapped his

fingers.” Uh… What’s her name again?”

“Raven.” Her name left my mouth like a pulled trigger.

Dexter’s smirk turned predatory. “Yeah. Right. That. Good name. So, you two, huh?”

I didn’t like that tone. “I beg you pardon?”

“Well, you care about her, duh. You like her, don’t you?”

The accusation should’ve been laughable. Instead, I felt somewhat uncomfortable. “She’s got a knife scar on her face and the situational

awareness of a combat veteran. Something’s not right.”

All humor drained from Dexter’s expression. He set down the pen with deliberate care. “She human?”

“Yeah, I think.” I ground my molars. “But her scent… There’s something off about it. It’s hard to describe.”

Dexter steepled his fingers. “And you, being the upstanding citizen that you are, naturally want to help this poor, defenseless damsel in distress?”

“Fuck off.”

know.” He grinned, then sobered. “You think she’s in trouble?”

kaven’s scent wild sage undercut with something darker, something wounded – flashed through my mind. “I know she is.”

studied me for a long moment before sighing dramatically. “Fine. I’ll dig up her lease paperwork. But only because I’m a sucker for tragic Sackstories and you’re hopeless at romance.” He gestured to the paper avalanche. “Somewhere in this mess…”

I should’ve said no. Should’ve walked away. But the image of that scar kept replaying behind my eyes.

“Okay.”

Dexter’s grin returned full-force. “Knew it.”

“Knew what?”

“That I’d finally get to watch you lose your damn mind over a woman.” He leaned back, lacing fingers behind his head. “This’ll be better than

Christmas.”

I flipped him off as I turned to leave, but not fast enough to miss his parting shot:

“Hey, fancy guessing if I’ll spill the beans on your secret crush?”
