Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 110

When Emma woke up the next morning and found out Carter was coming to the gathering too, she thought it was strange but didn't stop him.

The event was hosted in the Harrington family's private gardens, attended by the absolute elite of Capital City.

"Gillian is such a wonderful girl. Back when my health was failing and we were struggling, she was the one earning money to pay for my medical bills. It breaks my heart just thinking about it."

Gillian stood beside Pamela Palmer, soaking up the endless praise from the surrounding guests.

"Emma, you made it."

Pamela spotted her and Carter arriving and walked over to greet them warmly.

"The Lockwood children are all so exceptional, and our Emma here is in a league of her own—so independent and capable."

Pamela smiled brightly, taking Emma's hand to introduce her to the crowd.

Carter wanted to intervene, but Raymond Harrington called out to him.

"Your aunt is just being friendly. I heard you two got married?"

Carter pressed his lips together. "Yes, we did."

"Congratulations. Though you acted far too impulsively. Marriage is a massive life event; you should have at least discussed it with the family."

Carter wanted to fire back, but as his hand rested against the armrest of Raymond's wheelchair, the words died in his throat. He could only respond with heavy silence.

After introducing Emma to everyone, Pamela kept hold of her hand, speaking with overwhelming enthusiasm. "There are too many misunderstandings between you and Gillian. She hasn't been as blessed as you. You grew up in the Lockwood household, surrounded by luxury, and received the best education.

Gillian grew up in poverty. She had to be tough just to survive, so she doesn't understand the nuances of high society. If she ever steps on your toes, please be the bigger person and let it go."

Emma just smiled at her. Listening to the surrounding crowd murmur in sympathy for Gillian, she calmly lowered her eyes.

Pamela Palmer was certainly not simple.

Emma remained smiling and silent. Undeterred, Pamela plowed on, "Now that you and Carter have had this flash marriage, you and Gillian are basically going to be family. But you simply must have a wedding. Helena, you have to talk to him. No matter what, there has to be a wedding!"

Carter was one of the most highly sought-after bachelors in their circle. Countless families had been watching him like hawks. The sudden revelation of his marriage sent a wave of shock rippling through the crowd.

The mention of him refusing to host a wedding sparked even more gossip.

Did Carter not want to publicly acknowledge this marriage?
