When Emma finally arrived home, Carter was sitting on the living room sofa waiting for her.
"Why did you come downstairs? Let me check your wounds."
She walked over, dropping her bag to the side, and approached him with obvious concern.
Carter frowned. "Grandfather told me you went to the estate. He had high praise for you, but I was still worried."
He glanced toward the front door and pressed his lips together.
He had been boxed in by Emma's security detail and couldn't leave the house, otherwise he would have stormed the Harrington estate to back her up no matter what.
"Don't worry. Even though we're just married on paper, I'm going to do my best to be a proper Mrs. Harrington. I admit I was thoughtless regarding the hospital situation."
Emma had genuinely reflected on her actions. Regardless of what Carter's relationship was with that other woman, it was no excuse for her to completely ignore his family's crisis.
Now that she was back, she needed to adapt her blunt, overseas working style.
Hearing her words, Carter's frown only deepened.
"That's not what I meant. Grandfather said you were the one providing his treatment plans the entire time he was hospitalized. Did you... end up collapsing from exhaustion because of that?"
Guilt swirled in Carter's eyes. He couldn't believe he had actually assumed Emma didn't care about their relationship just because she hadn't visited the hospital immediately.
Looking back at how he had actively avoided her for a whole week simply because he was afraid to face her, Carter genuinely felt like an absolute jerk.
Emma didn't want to dwell on the topic, so she pivoted, pulling the wooden box from her bag.
"Your grandfather asked me to pass this along to you."
Carter's eyes darkened. Instead of taking the box, he reached out, caught Emma by the waist, and pulled her firmly against his chest.
Startled, Emma braced her hands against the back of the sofa to steady herself. "Your wounds!"
"They aren't that fragile."
Carter wrapped his arms around her, settling her onto his lap and caging her in.
"I'm sorry."
