Carter stared at him expressionlessly, gesturing for Percy to follow him downstairs.
"Emma is my wife."
Those words grated on Percy's nerves. Carter gave him a cool glance. "What are you doing here?"
"Tristan is competing in a race, and I came with Gillian. I heard you were around and wanted to ask if you'd like to rest at the resort," Percy muttered, his tone dropping.
"But it seems that won't be necessary. Gillian doesn't want to see Emma anyway."
Carter ignored his comment, his mind drifting to the race.
Emma's friend was supposed to race too. Could it be the same event?
Although Carter hadn't planned on visiting the resort, they had received an invitation. Pamela Palmer had invited them both to a gathering at the estate.
Carter had wanted to decline, but the message came directly from Uncle Raymond's people, leaving him with little choice.
Emma didn't mind. She wasn't opposed to interacting with Pamela.
She needed more contact with the woman to uncover any hidden clues.
On the day of the gathering, they arrived at the mountain resort.
Not long after, Uncle Raymond called Carter away.
Emma sat alone in a quiet corner, discreetly observing Pamela's every move.
"You must be Mrs. Harrington. Mr. Harrington prepared a surprise for you at the summit camp and asked me to take you there."
A resort attendant spoke respectfully.
Emma frowned. "Carter sent you?"
Carter would never prepare a surprise like that, nor would he send a stranger to fetch her.
Suspicious, she watched the attendant nod. "Yes, ma'am."
She thought for a moment before standing up. "Lead the way."
She wanted to see exactly what they were plotting.
Catching her reaction in his peripheral vision, Tristan let out a mocking laugh.
"Emma, all you have to do is call Gillian, apologize, and obediently admit your mistakes to the family. I'll turn the car around right now."
Tristan's eyes were dark. He knew Gillian still held a grudge over those two slaps and hated constantly feeling inferior to Emma.
He was doing this entirely to vent Gillian's frustrations.
Emma smirked. "I did nothing wrong. Why should I apologize? If you want to play chauffeur, then drive. But if we crash, I'll make sure to send you straight to hell first."
She pulled a butterfly knife from her bag, flipping it effortlessly in her hand.
Tristan was stunned. She carried a blade on her?
Frowning at the road ahead, he abruptly slammed on the brakes halfway up the mountain.
"Don't say I didn't warn you. This is a semi-wild nature reserve. It's not uncommon to see wolves or bears after dark."
"It's getting late. You either apologize to Gillian, or you get out."
