Not long after Emma exited the bar, Sylvia came sprinting after her.
"You knew that drink was spiked, and you still drank it?! Do you need me to get you to a hospital?!"
Emma stopped and gave Sylvia a very strange look.
Sylvia shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny. Remembering how fiercely they had clashed in school, she muttered, "I only hated you back then because of Phoebe. At this point, I have no actual beef with you."
Emma knew that was true. In high school, love and hate were pure. Now, everything was driven by profit and alignment.
She raised an eyebrow. "I'm fine."
Sylvia looked at her dubiously. "I should still walk you back."
"Suit yourself."
Emma continued her relaxed stroll. Unable to contain her curiosity, Sylvia asked, "What was in that drink?"
"Have you ever heard of a drug designed to make someone extremely obedient?"
Emma's casual tone made Sylvia gasp in horror. "And you drank it?!"
Before Emma could answer, a group of menacing men materialized from the shadows on both sides of the street.
Seeing the ambush, Sylvia's bravado completely evaporated. She whispered frantically, "Are your security guards nearby?"
"No."
The moment Emma said the word, Sylvia looked like she was ready to plan her own funeral.
Swallowing hard, Sylvia tried to sound intimidating. "Who are you people?! Do you have any idea who I am?! Get out of our way!"
Watching Sylvia put on a brave face while trembling like a leaf was mildly amusing to Emma.
In her memory, Sylvia had always used that exact line to bully people in school.
It turned out she was all bark and no bite.
The masked men ignored Sylvia completely, forming a tight, threatening circle around Emma.
After about a minute of a silent standoff, the thugs suddenly realized something was very wrong.
"What's going on?"
Gillian stepped out of the darkness, her eyes locked fiercely onto Emma.
"You drank the liquor!"
