Tristan opened his mouth to speak, but Sebastian threw out an arm to stop him.
"We heard Emma was in an accident. We came to check on her. How is she doing?"
Carter arched an eyebrow. "Where exactly did you hear that?"
Inside the bedroom, Emma's ears perked up.
News of her kidnapping had leaked that fast?
"It's all over the city. Everyone is saying Emma was abducted and got into a major car wreck. As for who started the rumor..." Sebastian frowned. "A lot of people at the gala were talking about it."
Carter's eyes darkened. Someone was deliberately pulling strings behind the scenes.
"And why are you here?" Carter's predatory gaze locked onto Tristan.
Sebastian opened his mouth, but Tristan waved him off.
Tristan simply couldn't hold anything in. Since Carter was asking, he immediately rushed to explain. "Mavis said her friends were arrested over a misunderstanding. Emma was just in a regular car crash, right? This whole thing has nothing to do with Mavis."
Carter let out a dark, mocking scoff. "So you came here to beg for mercy for my wife's attackers?"
"If it's just a misunderstanding, then tell them to let Mavis's friends go. We all run in the same circles—"
"Who says we run in the same circles?"
Carter's voice dropped to a dangerous octave, radiating the arrogant, icy dominance of a man at the absolute top of the food chain.
Just as the tension in the room reached a breaking point, Emma called out.
"Carter."
The terrifying aura rolling off Carter vanished instantly. He turned on his heel and slipped back into the bedroom.
"I just got hurt yesterday, and Sebastian is already here today. That means someone started spreading this story the second it happened."
Emma murmured thoughtfully.
Carter walked over to the bed, his fingertips lightly ghosting over her injured shoulder. "The gel isn't dry yet."
"It's fine. I know how this medication works. Just dress me."
"Mr. Harrington, are you doubting your wife's professional expertise?"
Her voice was breathy and soft, but to Carter, it sounded dangerously seductive.
A furious blush crept up the tips of his ears. He instinctively tried to pull back, but Emma caught his hands, trapping him in place.
"Don't move, or I'll tear my shoulder."
Emma stared up at him with wide, innocent eyes. Carter's mouth went completely dry. Hovering over her in the bed, he was terrified to flex a single muscle in case his struggling caused her further pain.
"Dress me. Please?"
Her soft request was a deadly hook.
Carter was still conflicted about the medication, but Emma decided to go for the kill. She leaned in until her lips brushed against his ear.
"Husband."
"The greatest trait of an excellent partner is obedience."
