Tristan hung his head, a rare wave of deep humiliation washing over him.
Sitting in her wheelchair, Emma shifted to cross her legs, but Carter instantly crouched down and pressed a firm hand against her knee to stop her.
"Begging me won't do any good," Emma said coolly. "Julian ordered me to stay on bed rest here for the next few days. I'm not the one handling the kidnapping investigation. As of right now, the police haven't even come by to take my statement. You do the math."
As the victim, the fact that no detective had approached her proved she had completely washed her hands of the situation. She didn't even need to be involved.
Tristan finally understood. He gave her a hesitant glance.
"Then... get some rest."
With that, he practically fled the room.
Watching Tristan go, Sebastian felt he was overstaying his welcome.
He was just about to say his goodbyes when Emma spoke up.
"Sebastian, I recall there being a Peacehaven Hospital in Garrison City, right? An older facility."
Emma kept her tone completely casual, skillfully fishing for information.
She didn't want Sebastian to know she was actively investigating it, terrified he might accidentally tip off the Lockwoods.
Sebastian didn't think much of it. He tapped his chin, thinking back. "Peacehaven... wasn't that the ER Aunt Violet was rushed to after her car crash? Why bring that up out of nowhere?"
Emma's heart did a violent flip. It really was tied to the baby swap.
"Oh, nothing really. One of the interns mentioned their family used to work there, but I couldn't find any records of the place. Just got me curious."
She lied through her teeth without breaking eye contact.
Sebastian nodded. "Yeah, that hospital suddenly shut down a few years ago. Most of their staff moved over to a new private facility called Mercy Private Hospital."
Emma mentally locked the name away.
"Emma, I know it's not really my place to pry into your life anymore, but I..."
Sebastian genuinely cared about her. When he heard she had been in a wreck, panic had gnawed at his stomach, and he had rushed over at breakneck speed.
But he also knew the reality: it wasn't the Lockwoods who disowned Emma, it was Emma who had severed ties with them. As a member of the extended family, he didn't have much right to hover.
