Rejected Heiress, Reigning Queen novel Chapter 166

"It doesn't matter if you refuse. I'll still look into it for you."

Having achieved exactly what he set out to do, Percy walked away thoroughly delighted, ignoring his deathly pale complexion.

Emma expressionlessly asked the butler to wheel her back to her room.

What struck her as bizarre was that from that day onward, she only ever saw Carter when it was time to change her dressings.

Every single time, he arrived in total silence, carefully changed her bandages, and left without a word.

If she occasionally asked what he was up to, he merely claimed he was swamped with work.

Emma was far too preoccupied with her own investigations to dig into whatever Carter was going through.

Half a month passed in the blink of an eye, and she could finally stand and walk on her own again.

"Is he still busy today?"

Emma asked one of the maids. Just then, Raymond happened to walk past.

"The patriarch of the Harrington family could never be an idle man," he stated coldly, his eyes brimming with his usual undisguised disdain.

Emma didn't bother to argue. She called Zachary to bring the car around, planning to head straight to Garrison City.

Percy, who had chased her outside, overheard the call. He raised an eyebrow. "I'll go with you."

"No need."

Emma rejected him frostily, but Percy pressed on. "I told you I'd help you investigate."

"Percy, you severely underestimate me."

She tossed the cold words at him. Afraid he would persistently pester her, her gaze darkened. "Whatever affection was between us died permanently the second you said those things in that private room."

Percy went completely white, freezing to the spot.

His Em had always been incredibly proud. What he had said that day had indeed crossed the line.

But why wouldn't she just give him one more chance?

Reluctant to accept defeat, Percy watched Emma get into the car. After agonizing over his next move, he decided to head to the corporate headquarters.

At the Harrington Group.

Carter was staring blankly at his phone.

Her sudden appearance made both men stiffen.

Carter couldn't even bring himself to look at Emma. He had indeed harbored inappropriate desires for his cousin's fiancée long before they broke up, and now that the truth was exposed, he lacked the courage to meet her eyes.

"Even without Carter, it was permanently over between us. If you keep arrogantly harassing me, I have zero issues personally erasing you from my life."

Emma's expression was freezing, radiating a proud, unyielding arrogance.

Her demeanor made it blatantly clear to everyone in the room: she wasn't bluffing.

Percy ground his back teeth together. Emma ignored him entirely and turned, sliding her arm through Carter's.

"I know you've been incredibly busy lately, but I'm heading out on a trip."

Emma's voice instantly softened, causing Percy's pupils to shrink in agony.

He was agonizingly familiar with this version of her.

She used to speak to him with that exact same tenderness.

"Carter, will you come with me?"
