Emma, Carter, and Travis Reynolds arrived at their hotel in Garrison City.
"I'm going to check Emma's injuries first. It might take a while," Carter said politely to Travis.
Travis's gaze darkened. "What do you know about checking injuries? Are you a doctor?"
He wanted to do it himself, but Emma felt incredibly awkward.
Because the burn on her shoulder covered a large area, she had to wear a strapless bra during the application. Having Travis, her senior colleague, see her like that was way too embarrassing.
"It's fine, Travis. Carter can handle it. If he needs help, he can ask me."
Emma had gotten used to Carter applying the ointment over the past few weeks and wanted to avoid any more awkwardness.
"Fine."
Travis retreated to his room, pulling down his mask to reveal a clenched jaw.
Carter Harrington was way too manipulative.
Back in their room, Emma zoned out as Carter gently applied the ointment. Her phone rang.
"Emma, I heard you're in Garrison City."
Violet's voice came through the speaker. Emma lowered her eyes, her tone flat. "Yes."
"Could you... could you please go visit your grandfather? He misses you terribly."
Violet's voice held a pleading note. Ever since she discovered her biological daughter had been switched at birth six years ago, she hadn't returned to Garrison City.
Thinking of Arthur Jennings, the grandfather who had always loved her, Emma softened slightly. "I'll visit him. But I still want to know why you insisted on traveling to Garrison City during your third trimester."
Doctors strongly advised against long-distance travel late in a pregnancy, and Violet surely knew that.
Violet remained silent for a long time. Finally, she spoke.
"Beatrice was superstitious. She insisted that—"
"Who are you talking to?"
