Emma didn't say anything to Carter; she simply grabbed her things and headed for the door.
"Travis, I'm heading back to my room," she said.
She pulled Carter out of the room, missing the dark, brooding expression on Travis's face as he sat on the sofa.
"Take your medication first."
As Emma went to prepare the medicine, Carter couldn't help but lean closer.
"Let me do it. You need to be careful with your shoulder wound; no heavy lifting."
Emma waved him off dismissively. "It's fine. I just won't use my left hand."
Afraid of pulling on her too hard, Carter could only stand by and watch.
The only sound in the room was the boiling water. The silence felt unfamiliar to Carter, and he pursed his lips for a long moment before finally speaking. "I know this crime isn't something an ordinary person could pull off, but Raymond absolutely wouldn't do this."
Caught off guard by his continuation of the topic, Emma paused.
"My grandfather groomed Raymond as an heir, and the very first thing an heir to the Harrington family must memorize is the legal code."
Carter explained, and Emma gathered her thoughts, nodding. "I know. My question earlier was indeed out of line."
"Not out of line. It's perfectly normal for you to be suspicious. I've been wondering myself who could be so brazen."
To mobilize heavy trucks for a staged car crash, and to ruthlessly sacrifice two lives just to kill her.
And now, to frame her, they had claimed yet another life.
Even in Capital City, very few people would dare act with such blatant disregard for the law.
Carter's men were investigating, Julian and Travis's networks were on it, and the police were searching as well.
For three straight days, they found nothing. On the fourth day, while Emma was dining in a restaurant, a crowd suddenly surrounded her.
"Murderer! Give me back my daughter's life!"
Mrs. Campbell, clutching a kitchen knife, charged into the restaurant and lunged straight at Emma.
Carter reacted the fastest, but just as he moved to shield her, another figure threw himself in the way, taking the full brunt of the blade.
The elderly woman wailed, "There is no justice! My daughter's body was cut open, yet her murderer is out here living a life of luxury! Give me back my daughter's life!"
"Emma, go with him to the hospital."
Raymond was wheeled forward, his demeanor stern and commanding.
Emma's gaze darkened to match his. "Why should I? I'm Carter's wi—"
"Because he took a blade to save you. As his family, you owe it to him to accompany him."
Seeing Percy pass out, Raymond forcefully cut off her protest.
"Raymond, it's not safe for Emma to go alone," Carter objected. The paramedics had just stated that only one person could ride in the back of the ambulance.
Raymond shot him a cool glance. "Her bodyguards and the Harrington family's men will be following right behind. What isn't safe?"
Before Carter could argue further, Raymond added, "Early this morning, a major accident occurred at one of the Reynolds Family's construction sites. Emma, you still want to see Travis safe, don't you?"
The color drained from Emma's face. No wonder Travis had left after only dropping a quick message—something terrible had happened.
She narrowed her eyes at Raymond, who sat with his hands neatly folded, watching her with an elegant yet menacing calm.
"Do you want to test my authority?"
