Emma Lockwood invited Violet directly to CFT Corporation.

"I'll leave you two to chat. I'll step out first." VP Levi took his compiled files and left the office.

Emma gave a curt nod. She looked at Violet and slid a small, sterile evidence bag across the desk.

"You don't need to go with me. Just give me a strand of hair with the follicle still attached."

Violet pressed her lips together. She carefully plucked a few hairs and slipped them into the bag, but she didn't hand it over to Emma right away.

"Logan..."

Violet hesitated, clearly struggling for words. Emma's eyes darkened. "What happened to Logan?"

"The lab he invested in went under. The partners took the money and vanished, and now he can't deliver on several projects he promised."

The stress had literally caused painful ulcers to form at the corners of Violet's mouth. Emma, however, wasn't surprised by the news at all.

"I warned him. He chose not to believe me."

Emma had thoroughly vetted that lab and knew it was a massive liability. If Logan had bothered to do his own due diligence, he would have spotted the red flags instantly.

Violet hadn't expected Emma to know about the lab. While her emotions were in a tangled knot, she hadn't forgotten the sole reason she was there.

"Can you help your brother?"

Emma raised an eyebrow. "Now you acknowledge me?"

"Emma..." Violet began, her voice thick with guilt. "I have always acknowledged you. I know you felt abandoned during those years overseas and that you carry a lot of resentment. That was my failure as a mother. It has nothing to do with your brother."

"Save it." Emma leaned back in her chair, elegantly crossing her legs. She narrowed her eyes. "I'll help him. That was the transaction we agreed upon."

Violet's heart clenched in agony. Staring at Emma, she couldn't help but remember the sweet, obedient little girl she used to be.

Emma had always been the Lockwood family's greatest pride. When did their relationship become this utterly broken?

"I just need to know, Ms. Jennings, do you want me to fast-track a new lab for him, or do you want me to hunt down the stolen money?"

Emma's icy, strictly business tone made Violet feel sick with regret.

She opened her mouth, desperately wanting to say something to thaw the freezing tension, but in the end, saving her son took priority.
