Gillian stormed into the room, furious. Emma just raised an eyebrow.
"See what I mean?"
Without waiting to see the look on Violet's face, Emma turned on her heel and walked out.
Behind her, Gillian's hysterical shrieks echoed down the hall.
"Am I your real daughter or not?! Why would you say that to her?! Begging her makes it sound like I'm weak! Do you really think I'm worse than her?!"
Gillian sounded utterly victimized. Emma simply sped up her pace down the stairs.
She had zero interest in listening to their mother-daughter drama.
Carter stood up to meet her. Emma looked over at Logan. "I checked on her. I'll have some medication delivered later. Or you can just take her to the hospital. Ms. Jennings isn't getting any younger, and ignoring an illness is a terrible idea."
"I know. But ever since Gillian came back, she refuses to go to the hospital when she's sick. I think it's because—"
"None of that matters. Whether you take her or not is your business. As a doctor, I've fulfilled my obligation to warn you."
Emma cut him off and turned to Carter. "Let's go grab dinner."
Before Carter could nod, Logan interjected.
"Stay for dinner. Mom and Dad really miss you."
Charles, who was sitting nearby, nodded in agreement. His pride wouldn't let him ask Emma directly, so he let Logan do the talking.
Emma glanced up toward the second floor. "I'll give you space to sort out your family matters. Besides, Carter isn't used to eating out, so we'll pass."
She was tired of wasting her breath on the Lockwoods and effortlessly used Carter as an excuse.
"We could go to a restaurant," Charles quickly offered, standing up. "We have a lot of misunderstandings to clear up. This is the perfect chance."
Noticing Emma's darkening expression, Carter smoothly stepped in. "I'll host dinner another time. Tonight, Emma and I are going to enjoy a date night, so we won't be inviting any guests."
To drive the point home, he wrapped his arm firmly around Emma's waist, pulling her flush against his side.
Gillian threw a massive tantrum while Logan patiently tried to coax her out of it.
From the couch, Percy silently watched the entire pathetic display unfold.
Outside, Emma and Carter were still attached at the hip.
Or rather, Carter had his arm wrapped like a vice around her waist and refused to let go.
"How long are you planning on holding me?" Emma patted the hand resting on her hip.
Carter only tightened his grip, completely shameless. "This neighborhood is full of people who know the Lockwoods. You wouldn't want them seeing us leave looking like two distant business partners, would you?"
Emma supposed he had a point and stopped trying to peel him off.
Carter's lips curved into a victorious smirk. As they walked to the car, Emma's phone suddenly rang. It was her assistant.
"Boss, a Ms. Lawrence is asking to see you. She claims her daughter is a close friend of yours."
