She had deliberately threatened Logan to test Charles's reaction.

And she had purposely gone to the construction site to give them the perfect window to attack.

Consequently, after leaving the police station, the two sat in the car in dead silence.

Emma's mind was completely consumed by that embrace and his words. That wasn't the way one treated a mere business partner.

As for Carter, he simply didn't dare face her.

Emma's overt trap hadn't just lured Charles into biting; it had snagged him right along with it.

"Carter—"

"Let's hit a restaurant. We should get something to eat."

Realizing she was about to speak, Carter swiftly cut her off.

He couldn't bear to hear any goodbyes or interrogations.

Emma snapped her mouth shut and nodded in quiet agreement.

She could practically feel Carter's nerves, though she had no idea what he was so anxious about.

Was he afraid she would interrogate him? What did he have to be scared of?

A bizarre tension suffocated the car all the way to the restaurant. It got so awkward that the driver eventually had to raise the partition just to escape the strange atmosphere.

Even after arriving at the restaurant, Carter kept acting like he was impossibly busy.

"Carter, the food is already here. Are we ordering more?"

Emma had watched him clutch the menu since they entered the private room, and he was still intensely studying it now that the food had arrived.

The waiter standing nearby was sweating bullets. Was Mr. Harrington displeased with the dishes?

Carter muttered a vague response. Emma, thoroughly exasperated, set down her silverware. "Carter."

The waiter's eyes nearly popped out of his skull. Was anyone actually allowed to address Mr. Harrington by his full first name?

Carter pressed his lips together, silently handing the menu back and waving the waiter away.
