Gillian opened her mouth to argue further, but George completely cut her off.
"Em is my legally adopted daughter. Since your family refuses to acknowledge her, it's the perfect time to transfer her residency permanently into the Vance family registry as my heir."
The moment George's words echoed through the room, Charles looked as though he had been struck by lightning.
Emma was George Vance's adoptive daughter?
The Vances might not wield the same ruthless corporate power as the Harringtons, but their political and historical influence was unmatched by almost any family in the capital. Even the Harringtons couldn't easily mess with them.
Why had Emma never mentioned a single word about this?
"You..." Gillian's eyes widened in sheer disbelief. She couldn't fathom how Emma could possibly be this lucky!
George glared at the Lockwoods, his voice dropping to a lethal octave. "I originally invited you here out of respect for Em. But you have crossed the line. Consider this a warning: if I hear even a whisper of a rumor trashing Em's name in this city, your family will be erased from the map."
Charles's face turned an ashen gray. Emma, completely exhausted by their presence, turned away and walked toward the dining room. "Mom, Dad, I'm starving."
"Let's eat, then." Marian immediately linked her arm through Emma's, guiding her away while motioning for the butler to throw the Lockwoods out.
During dinner, the gifts Carter had arranged via his assistant arrived: priceless paintings, luxury watches, and breathtaking custom jewelry.
After the meal, Marian pulled Emma upstairs to chat.
"The Harringtons are the most powerful family in the city, which means they have endless rules and traditions. I've prepared a few high-end gifts for you. Make sure you bring them when you officially visit their estate."
Marian then handed Emma two sleek envelopes. "Regent's Auction House is hosting a private event over the next two days with some phenomenal pieces. You and Carter should go pick out something you like, and don't forget to bid on some antiques for the Harrington elders."
Emma nodded, a sweet smile on her face. "Thanks, Mom."
She leaned affectionately against Marian's shoulder. Marian hugged her tight and added, "But remember, even though the Harringtons hold all the power, you never have to compromise your dignity. If they ever dare mistreat you, tell Julian. Tell us. We will always have your back. The Vances may keep a low profile, but we don't let anyone step on our family."
"I know."
