Chapter 106 What Jason Needs
Isabella stepped out of the car quickly, not expecting Xavier to follow her up the driveway.

“Why are you following me?” she said, turning to face him. “Our agreement stated you wouldn’t interfere with my personal-”
But Xavier simply continued toward the front door, leaving her sentence hanging. Isabella frowned, confused. He was a notorious workaholic–unless he was completely swamped or out of town, he’d be at the office from dawn till dusk, no exceptions. It was way too early for him to call it a day.
“Just coming home to rest,” Xavier cut in before she could finish.
He shut the car door and turned, his tall frame looming over her. Their eyes met, and Isabella felt that familiar, unsettling pull.
His voice was flat, but his dark, intense gaze always seemed to hold something more–something that made her feel like she was sinking every time he looked at her.
She glanced away, pressing her lips together. “Well, that’s a first. Even the work machine knows how to power down.”
Xavier didn’t reply. Without another word, Isabella hurried inside and up the stairs to her room. She cracked the door open just enough to peek back into the hallway. Once she confirmed he hadn’t followed her up, she closed the door and turned the lock.
After changing into comfortable loungewear, she headed into the ensuite bathroom for a long, hot bath. Sinking into the water, she tried to relax, but images of Xavier standing in front of her kept flashing in her mind.
She dunked her face under, holding her breath for a few seconds before resurfacing, wiping water from her eyes with both hands. Still, a restless, prickling feeling lingered under her skin, like ants crawling through her chest.
Once she’d dried off and dressed, Isabella checked the clock. It was exactly five–right around the time Jason usually had his pre- dinner play session at the care center. She settled onto the edge of her bed and video–called him.
Jason’s progress had been remarkable. This time when his face appeared on screen, there were a few little girls playing in the background behind him. For the first time, Isabella saw a hint of shyness in his expression. He was less clingy than before, more engaged with his surroundings, though his eyes still lit up when he saw her.
After their chat, Sander came on to give his weekly update, Over the past few weeks, he’d been conducting regular play therapy
sessions with Jason.
Through careful observation, Sander believed Jason still had a deep–seated need for a father figure–someone to model healthy attachment and provide guidance. The boy clearly longed for a dad’s affection, even though he worked hard to hide it.
Sander gently suggested that if Jason could form a secure bond with a reliable male presence, it might be the final push he needed to start speaking again.
“A father…” Isabella repeated the word softly, almost to herself. Did that mean she needed to track down the man from all those years ago?
“Isabella.” Sander’s voice softened slightly. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be his biological father. What matters is someone who can genuinely fill that role for him someone steady, trustworthy. That could be enough.”
His words hung in the air, and against her will, the first person who came to mind was Xavier.
Isabella quickly shut down the thought. Her marriage to Xavier was temporary, and if he ever found out about Jason… she didn’t

even want to imagine the fallout.
“Thanks for the insight, Sander. I’ll… think about it carefully.”
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. Then Sander let out a soft, low laugh.
“You know, Isabella… if I said I wanted to be that person for Jason–to be a father to him–I wonder if I’d even stand a chance?”
Isabella’s hand jerked slightly, the phone nearly slipping from her grip. For a second, she thought she’d misheard him.
“Sander… please don’t joke about something like that.”
“I’m not joking. I’m completely serious.”
His tone was unusually solemn. He paused, then added, “I’ve always admired my cousin for having your heart, even back then.”
“Sander, the past wasn’t what you think it was. And right now, my life is… complicated. You deserve someone who isn’t carrying all this baggage.”
“To me, you’re worth it,” he replied without hesitation, his voice clear and firm. “You’ve never really looked at me, Isabella. So please… don’t shut me out before you do.”
“Thank you for caring, Sander. Really. But I’ll figure things out for Jason on my own. Let’s… not go down this road, okay?”
“You still have feelings for him, don’t you? For Xavier.”
Isabella had been about to end the call, but his question froze her finger over the screen.
“No.”
“Then unless your heart is completely off–limits, I’m willing to wait.”
He said it with a quiet stubbornness, and before she could respond, the call disconnected.
Isabella sat there holding her phone, staring at the dark screen for a long time. How had things gotten so messy? Since when did Sander see her that way? And if she ended up hurting him, would he take it out on Jason somehow?
Her chest tightened with sudden anxiety. She’d thought aligning herself with the Whitmans would keep Xavier in check… but now everything felt more tangled than ever.
A little while later, a soft knock came at her door. Dinner was ready, but Isabella had no intention of going downstairs. One of the housestaff brought a tray up to her room, her expression kind but concerned.
“You’ve lost weight, Mrs. Moore,” the maid said gently. “You really should try to eat a bit more.”
“We made lemon–herb roasted chicken tonight–it’s one of your favorites,” added another, one of the younger girls, her eyes hopeful.
Isabella didn’t have much appetite, but under their warm, watchful gazes, she felt too guilty to refuse. With a small sigh, she picked up her fork and took a bite.
The flavors were comforting and perfectly seasoned–homely yet refined. Despite herself, she took another bite, then another.
“This is really wonderful,” she said sincerely.
