Chapter 108 Not Overthinking
“Yes.”
Xavier took Isabella’s hand, closing the space between them in an instant. The scent of alcohol on him was faint, his breath warm and sweet as it brushed against her skin.
For a moment, Isabella hesitated, then tilted her head slightly to put a little distance between her face and his.
“From now on, I’ll always be here for you. No one’s going to hurt you again.”
Xavier’s lips came so close they almost grazed her cheek. A heated intensity flickered deep in his eyes–something Isabella couldn’t quite make out clearly. All she felt was her body stirring, like water slowly coming to a simmer.
She tried to step back, but Xavier held her arm–not with his usual firm grip, though. After just a few seconds, he let go.
Isabella was at a loss for words. She didn’t understand what he was trying to say.
But the icy exterior he usually wore seemed to have melted away, replaced by a warmth that softened his every feature.
It was a kind of gentleness, a sincerity… and yet, it felt just out of reach.
Suddenly, her mind flashed back to years earlier.
The area outside the CEO’s office had been packed. Several senior employees at Moore Group were fired on the spot–all because they’d been bullying a new junior assistant.
Xavier handled the situation decisively, sharp and unsparing. It didn’t just shock everyone present; it left Isabella utterly stunned.
“Pack your things and move to the new desk.”
With that cool instruction, Isabella went from being a low–level employee to having her own desk right outside the CEO’s office, becoming the most untouchable person in the entire company.
Later, she cautiously asked Xavier if it had been too harsh–making longtime employees resent him just to stand up for her.
His reply was unwavering. “The people under me are my responsibility. From now on, no one at Moore Group will lay a finger on you.”
Back then, those words made her heart feel like it was blooming. Right then and there, a wild field of flowers seemed to grow inside her–vast, endless, stretching farther than she could see.
But now…
Xavier looked exactly like he did back then, the same way that made her heart flutter once.
Only, she wasn’t that young woman anymore. Now, she didn’t just think about his protectiveness–she also wondered what was behind it.
For a moment, a pang of sadness washed over her.
The more beautiful a feeling was, the more fragile it became. Once something was cracked, no matter how hard you tried to hold the pieces together, you knew it could never be the same again.

Chapter 108 Not Overthinking
“When Noah got into trouble yesterday… did you really believe me?”
After a pause, Isabella finally asked.
A flicker of surprise passed through Xavier’s eyes. His voice softened slightly. “I didn’t overthink it.”

When he found out what happened to Noah, he was angry, but underneath that, he was more worried about Isabella getting dragged into it. He hadn’t stopped to consider the details.
Only one thought was in his mind–to keep her out of it, no matter what.
Seeing his expression, Isabella already had her answer.
“Not overthinking it” meant he’d already assumed she was capable of something like that.
Put simply, he was still the same. He acted like he trusted her, but he’d never really trusted her at all.
Meanwhile, even if he saw right through Linda’s lies, he wouldn’t call her out on them.
“I see. You should get some rest. Dr. Ashford said you shouldn’t be drinking.”
Isabella ended the conversation calmly, then turned and headed back to her room.
Xavier’s heart sank. He reached out as if to stop her, but the words never came.
Was she… blaming him?
The next day, Isabella woke up before dawn, planning to head to Moore Group ahead of Xavier.
The night before, she’d reached out to the Whitman family through Barry and learned that Moore Group had already made its move. The Whitmans‘ new venture was facing serious setbacks–enough to deal a crushing blow.
That was why she needed to go to Moore Group today and see the situation for herself.
“Morning.” But to her surprise, even though Isabella had gotten up in the dark, Xavier was already there,
Isabella startled, turning to find him standing right behind her, tall and composed.
“Xavier… what are you doing up?”
As soon as she asked, she realized how pointless the question was,
This was Xavier’s house, Where else would he be?
Xavier didn’t acknowledge her question. Instead, he turned away, coffee cup in hand, and took a seat at the dining table.
“Come here.”
Seeing Isabella still standing there, he spoke again, his voice low and cool, carrying that natural authority that expected to be obeyed.
