After her shower, Isabella received a call from Hannah.

“If it’s too much, just forget the divorce for now,” Hannah said, her voice tinged with immediate anxiety. “I’m just worried you’re walking back into the lion’s den. Xavier isn’t someone you can outmaneuver easily. What if you get trapped again…”

“Don’t worry. I haven’t forgotten the past.”

Isabella’s voice turned cool. Her gaze fell on the large, brilliant diamond ring on her finger. No matter how perfectly it fit, it had never been intended for her.

Linda was Xavier’s true love, his destined partner. Anything Isabella did now was merely to ensure those two were permanently bound together, freeing herself in the process.

“Alright.” Hannah had little choice but to trust her sister’s judgment.

“By the way,” Hannah added, shifting topics, “I got word that someone here has posted a massive bounty to find you for a medical consultation. Some of the top hackers on the dark web are already on the hunt. Are you going to take the case?”

The news gave Isabella pause. Her plate was already overflowing. Where would she find the time to take on a patient?

“No.”

Hannah wasn’t surprised by the answer. “Skyler said you wouldn’t. So he went ahead and blocked all the inbound traces from those hackers. You should have some peace for a while.”

When it came to cybersecurity, few in the world could rival the little prodigy of the Carter family. This was a point of immense pride for Isabella, and the primary reason she rarely worried about her Aletta alias being compromised.

However, the moment Hannah ended the call and turned around, she found Skyler standing right behind her, his expression uncharacteristically solemn.

“You nearly gave me a heart attack! Why are you still up?” Hannah sighed, scooping him up into her arms.

Skyler fixed his large, serious eyes on her. “Aunt Hannah, is Mommy in trouble?”

“Don’t you worry about that. With a little guardian like you around, no one would dare bully your mom.”

Hannah pinched his cheek affectionately, carried him to his bedroom, tucked him in with a few reassuring words, and turned off the light.

But the moment her footsteps faded, Skyler slipped out of bed. He padded silently on bare feet to his younger sister Lydia’s room.

Hearing the door creak, Lydia, who had been trying on a new wig in front of her vanity, yanked it off and dove under her pink sequined comforter in one fluid motion.

Skyler flicked on the bedside lamp with a snap, crossed his arms, and hopped onto the plush pink gaming chair beside her bed.

ydia threw off the covers, her face breaking into an impossibly sweet smile as she scrambled over to him.

Lydia, Mommy might need backup, I have to go. Here’s the secure key to contact me. I’ll message you when it’s necessary”

As he spoke, Skyler tossed a tiny, matte–black USB drive, no bigger than a fingernail, to his sister.

Lydia caught it deftly, her expression shifting to concern. “What’s wrong with Mommy? Is Jason okay?”

“Someone’s looking for Aletta to treat a patient. The person funding the search has resources… almost on my level. I’m worried Mommy won’t see the threat in time.”
