He had never been one to pay much attention to other people’s feelings. When he’d taken a dislike to her, he wouldn’t even glance her way twice
And in that sense, she was just like him.
Back when Xavier would push himself too hard and fall sick, Isabella would sit silently by his bedside all night. But the moment he started to recover, she’d vanish without a word.
She never showed vulnerability, never asked for recognition.
So he’d matched her tone–somewhere along the line, he’d grown used to her, attached to her, unwilling to let her go… and he hadn’t even realized it was happening.
“Sander kept calling. I figured it was getting annoying, so I dealt with it.”
His expression didn’t flicker as he calmly handed the phone back to Isabella.
Just as she took it, one of the housekeepers quickly spoke up.
“Mrs. Moore, actually… Mr. Moore didn’t take your phone. Your son brought it over. That man kept calling, so Mr. Moore called him back for you…”
Isabella shot the housekeeper a puzzled look. Since when were her people taking Xavier’s side?
Before she could respond, Skyler rushed over and wrapped his arms around her leg.
He looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes.
Isabella was at a loss. She already knew Skyler had taken her phone, but still…
Even so, what gave Xavier the right to return calls on her behalf?
After handing Skyler off to a housekeeper to take to the dining room, Isabella turned back to Kavier alone.
“Xavier, we agreed not to interfere in each other’s lives. If you pull something like this again, I won’t just let it slide.”
“If it was so unnecessary, why didn’t you stop me?”
Xavier watched her leisurely, his breath faintly brushing her cheek.
While he was on the phone with Sander, Isabella could’ve cut in anytime. Instead, she’d just stood there, watching him coolly–as if waiting for him to finish his performance.
His words carried a certain weight, and Isabella felt her face warm for no clear reason.
“I didn’t stop you… to spare you the embarrassment. Jason was there, I didn’t want to argue in front of a child.”

Her reply came out slightly halting. She threw him an irritated glance.
He always had to have the last word, always one step ahead.
What happened to his promise not to let her down?
She was plenty disappointed right now.
“Is that so?” Xavier studied her face for a moment before a faint smile touched his lips.
“What else would it be?”
Isabella quickly put some space between them, unaware her cheeks were still flushed.

Did he actually think she’d let him do it because she liked hearing him say those things–or because she was jealous of Sander?
No way.
“Hmm.” Xavier let out a low hum. His calm tone somehow made it sound even more suggestive.
Isabella felt a knot form in her chest. She opened her mouth but couldn’t find the right words.
Xavier turned and walked toward the dining room. After a few steps, he paused as if something had just occurred
to him.
“But this does prove one thing.
“Sander isn’t exactly winning points with your son. He still prefers me as his dad.”
Dad? He isn’t even the biological father.
Seeing the look of quiet triumph on Xavier’s face, Isabella felt a strong urge to smack him.

Meanwhile, Sander remained seated in his office, holding his phone long after Xavier had hung up.
It wasn’t until his assistant knocked that he finally snapped out of it.
“Come in.”
His voice was low.
The assistant opened the door. Behind her stood Teresa, dressed in elegant business attire.
Without so much as glancing at Sander, Teresa walked over to the sofa opposite his desk, sat down, removed her sunglasses and leather gloves, and waved the assistant away.

“Hold all my calls. No coffee needed—I’ll only be a moment.”
The assistant glanced at Sander, who gave a slight nod, and then stepped out.
This was the Whitman family’s company, yet Teresa carried herself as if she owned the place.
Sander’s expression tightened briefly before he composed himself and walked over calmly.
“Was there something you needed?”
