Of course, Xavier couldn’t love her.

To be honest, when Isabella first realized this, she had felt a deep sense of loneliness-but over time, she had come to accept it.
Now, though, she couldn’t help wondering where his feelings for her actually stood.
The next morning, just after dawn.
Xavier slowly opened his eyes. His body felt heavy, and the slightest movement sent a sharp, stabbing pain through the wound in his shoulder.
He let out a low groan before catching himself and pressing his lips together, holding back both the sound and his breath.
That was when he noticed the woman beside his bed.
Isabella’s right arm was in a sling, and she had slumped into an awkward position, leaning over the edge of his mattress.
There was a perfectly comfortable visitor’s bed right next to his, but clearly she had spent the whole night keeping watch just like
that.
Xavier pushed himself up with effort and reached out gently to brush a stray strand of hair from her face.
He wanted to touch her cheek, but he was afraid of waking her.
After a moment’s hesitation, he carefully shifted to the other side of the bed and stood up.
Even moving slowly, the strain on his muscles tugged at his injury, sending fresh waves of pain through him.
Gritting his teeth against the discomfort, Xavier bent down and lifted Isabella into his arms.
Every muscle in his body tensed as he focused on keeping his movements steady and controlled. Only once he had her securely against his chest did he take a slow step toward the neatly made guest bed across the room.
“Knock, knock-”
A loud rap at the door broke the silence.
Damn it.
Xavier’s brow furrowed. Before he could react, he felt the woman in his arms stir and blink open her eyes, her gaze still hazy with sleep.
Isabella felt weightless, almost as if she were floating. It took her a second to focus on Xavier’s face and realize he was carrying her.
“Xavier… how are you feeling?”
The question came out on instinct. She tried to get down, but as soon as she shifted, she saw the color drain even further from his already pale face.

“Did Thurt your shoulder? Does it hurt?”
She froze, letting him lower her gently onto the bed.

“I’m fine,” Xavier replied right away, but the tightness in his expression and the fresh blood seeping through the bandage on his shoulder gave him away.
“You’re bleeding!”
Isabella sat up again, reaching for his wound.
“It’s nothing-”
“Let me see it.”
Xavier took half a step back instinctively, not wanting her to worry, but Isabella followed and caught his arm.
In the slight struggle, she nearly stumbled right into his chest.
And that was exactly when Jacob pushed the door open.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
There they were-two figures close together, looking for all the world like they were wrapped up in an intimate moment.
Xavier’s hospital gown hung open, most of his torso exposed along with the bandaged wound. He looked thoroughly disheveled, and the scene left little to the imagination.
Jacob stood in the doorway holding two paper bags of food, unsure whether to step in or back out.
He’d come by to drop off breakfast. After knocking and getting no answer, he’d assumed they were still asleep-but then he’d heard noises and worried something was wrong.
If he’d known it was this, he would’ve never walked in.
“Did I say you could come in?”
Sure enough, Xavier’s voice dropped low and dangerous.
Isabella quickly turned her face away. The atmosphere had shifted into something suddenly awkward.
She knew there was nothing inappropriate going on between them, yet it felt like they’d been caught in the middle of something deeply private.
“M-Mr. Moore… I’m sorry. I’ll just-.”
Jacob began to turn, then glanced down at the bags in his hands.
“I brought breakfast. You should both eat, keep your strength up while you recover…”
“What do you think?”
Xavier cut him off coldly.

The Weight of his glare made Jacob shut his mouth and start to retreat.
“Leave the food.”
