Just as she’d expected, the room was empty. The bed was made so neatly it could have been a display model in a furniture store- not a single crease in sight.
She knocked several times and called out Xavier name, but there was no response.
Giving up, she set down the things she was holding and turned the doorknob with one hand.
A wave of cool air washed over her as she stepped inside.
The window was wide open, the curtains swelling and fluttering in the breeze.
Isabel a’s gaze swept across the room before landing on Xavier, who was lying on his back across the leather couch opposite the
desk.
His tall frame was curled loosely, one leg bent and the other resting over the armrest–it didn’t look comfortable in the slightest.
As she moved closer, she noticed the only cover he had was his own suit jacket, pulled haphazardly from his head down to his
chest.
The couch was positioned directly across from the open window, and the draft blowing through was strong enough to make Isabella shiver herself.
Was he trying to catch a cold sleeping like that?
She walked over and shut the window. The soft click of the latch seemed to stir the figure on the couch.
“Mmm… cough…”
Xavier let out a low groan and pushed the jacket off his face. Rubbing his brow, he blinked until Isabella’s form came into focus.
Was he dreaming?
Why was she standing there in front of him?
But the moment he shifted, a sharp chot wound, snapping him back to reality.
“You’re not going to get better if you keep sleeping like this.”

Before Xavier could even sit up, Isabella was already beside him. No sooner had she spoken than she reached out and pressed a hand to his forehead.
“What are you doing here?”
Xavier’s voice was rough as he tried to pull away, but Isabella had already leaned in, half her weight against him. When she pressed down, he sank back into the cushions.
“Get up.”
Xavier clenched his jaw and grabbed her wrist, though his grip lacked its usual strength.
Otherwise, he had plenty he’d rather be doing right now–starting with taking Wilson apart piece by piece, then reducing the entire

isabella paid no attention to his cold tone. After checking his forehead, her fingers moved to his wrist, feeling for his pulse.
Xavier tried to pull his hand back but ended up tugging her forward instead, until her face was pressed against his overheated
chest.
For a moment, everything went still.
Both of them could hear the other’s heartbeat, loud in the quiet room.
Isabel a’s body was soft. And the way she leaned against him, with only thin layers between them…
Xavier’s throat went dry. The words telling her to leave caught somewhere inside him, refusing to come out.
Isabella, however, kept her composure. Still holding his wrist, she spoke calmly, “There’s a lot of inflammation. You didn’t take your medication when you got back, did you?”
“None of your business.” Xavier’s lips thinned, his tone cool. “Get off.”
“Do you really mean that?”
Isabella lifted her head, her chin digging lightly into his chest–the sensation was pointed and oddly ticklish.
Her eyes were bright and held a gleam of amusement, as though she were quietly laughing at him.
“Yes.” He ground the word out, not looking away.
Did this woman have no conscience?
Every time he remembered how she’d shielded Sander, his anger spiked all over again.
And here she was, acting as if nothing had happened.
Did she really not care at all how he felt?
“Fine. But would you mind letting go of my waist?”
Isabella lowered her voice and deliberately brought her face a little closer to his.
“I’ve only got one good hand right now. I can’t get up on my own.”
It was only then that Xavier realized he’d wrapped his arm around her waist without thinking
He released her immediately.
Isabella pushed herself up slowly from the couch. Xavier had turned his face away, but she could see the faint flush along his cheekbones–whether from the fever or something else, she couldn’t tell.
“Ahem.” After a moment, Isabella cleared her throat lightly. “Sit up and take your medicine.”
“I’ll take it myself.”

Xavier kept his back to her, his voice low and edged with impatience.

But then a rich, savory aroma reached him. Isabella had settled beside him again, and soon he could hear the soft sounds of her
eating.
Xavier finally turned over. On the coffee table in front of her was a big bowl of pasta, still steaming and rich with color–it looked surprisingly appetizing.
It wasn’t just plain pasta, either. Nestled in a light, savory broth were delicate ribbon noodles, clear and silky.
On top rested a sunnysideup fried egg, crisp bacon strips, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley, wafting a warm, satisfying aroma.
Isabella was enjoying every bite, slurping the slippery noodles along with the broth and toppings. Without thinking, Xavier felt himself swallow hard.
This woman… she made it look so good.
“What are you doing?” he asked coldly.
Isabella didn’t even glance over, just mumbled around a mouthful, “Eating.”
“I’m not blind.”
Xavier was momentarily lost for words. He tried not to watch her eat. “Who said you could eat in here?”
He hated when people ate in his study–the smell always lingered for hours.
Besides, he really didn’t want to see her right now. Was she really that unaware, or was she just pretending not to notice?
“Well, you never said I couldn’t.”
