“That’s correct, Mr. Moore. It was Mrs. Moore who brought you to the hospital by herself. According to Dr. Ashford, the immediate care she provided on the way is a key reason you’re stable now.”
Xavier said nothing.
Isabella had just reached the hallway when Linda caught up to her.
“Isabella!” Linda stepped in front of her, blocking her path. “Tell me honestly, do you still have feelings for Xavier?”
Isabella found the question absurd and moved to walk past her.
“Ms. Allen, I don’t believe I’m obligated to answer your questions.”
“I know you resent me, but for Xavier’s happiness, I can set that aside. The condition is that you must treat him well and never hurt him!” As she spoke, Linda’s eyes welled up with tears, her voice thick with a sense of sacrifice.
This portrayal of selfless love almost evoked a pang of sympathy–almost.
Isabella reached out and gently traced a finger along Linda’s smooth cheek. After studying her face for a moment, she deliberately let the sharp edge of her nail press into the skin.
“Linda, do you really think I’m that easily fooled? Back then, you used every trick in the book against me, all in the name of ‘love‘ and ‘what’s right. Now you want to play the victim? Don’t you think it’s a little late for that act?”
“So you really did come back just for revenge–against me and Xavier!” A cold smirk touched the corners of Linda’s mouth. They were standing close, and she lowered her voice to a whisper.
“Well, if I were as idle as you seem to think, I wouldn’t have waited five years to start.”
As she spoke, Isabella angled her nail slightly and inflicted a tiny, precise prick on the most tender part of Linda’s cheek.
“Ah!”
Linda flinched from the sharp sting and tried to push Isabella’s hand away, but she was no match for the other woman’s strength. Isabella tightened her grip on Linda’s face and shoved her firmly against the nearby wall.
“Let me make myself clear: stop getting in my way. Or do you really believe I can’t bring down the entire Allen family if I choose to?”
The entire Allen family? Linda almost laughed. The woman was all talk. Without Xavier, she was nothing!
Just as Linda was about to retort, she noticed a figure approaching from down the hall. Her expression shifted instantly, and her eyes welled up with fresh tears.
“It’s… It’s only natural for you to be upset with me. I misjudged you before… But seeing how you helped Xavier today, I know you still care for him, don’t you?”
“Linda, if you can’t hold onto Xavier, that’s your own failure. Don’t try to drag me into it.”
Isabella was growing impatient. This woman truly didn’t know when to quit.
Hoping to end the conversation and send Linda scurrying back to Xavier, Isabella raised her voice deliberately.

“As far as I’m concerned, it would be better for everyone if Xavier were dead. The only catch is, he’d better not die anywhere near me–it would be terrible luck.”
The words felt cathartic to say. A faint, triumphant smile also touched Linda’s lips.
“Terrible luck‘ if he died near you. My apologies for the inconvenience.”
A low, dangerously calm male voice sounded from behind her. An icy chill seemed to radiate from the space at her back.
Isabella immediately released Linda, who covered her cheek and hurried to stand behind Xavier, her face a mask of gentle concern. “Xavier, you shouldn’t be out of bed!”
Turning, Isabella saw Xavier clutching the back of his hand where the IV had been. A small smear of blood was visible–he must have pulled the needle out forcefully.
Had he come out here looking for them? Was he worried about… Linda?
“What happened to your face?” Xavier ignored Linda’s question, his attention fixed on the hand covering her cheek.
Lindą lowered her hand. The small, red mark stood out starkly against her pale skin. She deliberately glanced toward Isabella. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”
Xavier’s gaze locked onto Isabella, his eyes cold, sharp, and blazing with a fury that felt murderous.
“Did you do this?” The words were ground out between his teeth.
A flicker of fear passed through Isabella. For a moment, she felt certain he was about to lunge at her.
“Xavier, she didn’t mean it,” Linda interjected softly. “It was my fault–I got in her way, and it was an accident…”
