“It was my fault. I shouldn’t have messed up something so simple!” Emma immediately put on a pitiful expression. She turned to Isabella and pleaded, “Mrs. Moore, please don’t be upset with me. I’ve worked here a long time–can you let it slide just this once? I’ll go do it right away!”
The sudden shift in her attitude made it hard to take her seriously.
Still, since Emma had been working for Xavier for a while, Isabella didn’t want to come down too hard on her. She was about to tell her to forget it when Xavier spoke again, his voice cold.
“Then make the hangover soup before you leave.”
Emma burst into tears on the spot. She immediately bowed her head toward Xavier and begged, “Mr. Moore! I’ve always been hardworking and careful–how can one mistake be enough to fire me? Please give me another chance. I promise next time I’ll-”
“You locked her up all day.”
Xavier cut her off again.
His expression gave nothing away. His tone was calm, but it was the kind of calm that sent a chill down your spine.
Emma trembled. “Mr. Moore, Mrs. Moore kept insisting on leaving. I really didn’t dare—”
“That makes two.”
Emma’s hope crumbled completely. Her mouth fell open, but no excuse came out.
Isabella also gave up on the idea of speaking up for Emma. “Make a few different kinds of hangover soup, just in case your boss doesn’t like one. Since you’ve always been so diligent, you might as well do your last shift well.”
When she turned around, she met Xavier’s cold, deep gaze. Seeing the satisfied look on her face, he couldn’t help letting a faint smile tug at the corner of his mouth.
But that faint expression shifted the atmosphere between them into something more charged.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Isabella knew it was Harry and went to open the door.

When she saw Harry about to change his shoes, she naturally grabbed a fresh pair of guest slippers for him.
“Ms. Carter, I can handle it myself!” Harry said, a little flustered by the gesture. But when he looked up, the angle of the woman bending over gave him a clear view down the front of her nightgown–it was hard to miss.
He quickly turned his head away, only to find Xavier standing right behind Isabella.
The look on the man’s face was cold, his expression clearly displeased.
Harry’s heart jumped. He slipped the slippers on quickly and put some distance between himself and Isabella.
Xavier and Harry went back to the bedroom, but Isabella didn’t follow.
She thought about using this chance to slip out, but the moment she stepped outside, two rows of newly assigned security guards stood in her way, blocking her all at once.
Xavier had meant what he said–and he’d come prepared.
Dejected, Isabella went back to the living room couch. Just then, a message came through on her phone.
“The internal structure of Whitman Properties has been adjusted as instructed. The board is now under Sander’s control.”
The sender’s profile picture was solid black, and the name was simply “Barry“.
Barry Cole was the personal financial advisor managing Isabella’s assets, reporting only to her. Apart from Isabella, no one–not even the Carter family–had the right to know anything about him.
Isabella had only met him once. Barry looked like a typical banker–neat in a suit, tall and handsome, though quite young, around her age.
The reason she’d chosen Barry over the top advisors the Carter family had recommended was simple–Barry’s father had been her mother’s investment advisor for ten years.
“You did great. Thank you.”
Isabella replied briefly.
She had already seen the news about the Whitman family that morning.

The Whitman family had restructured quickly and announced they were ending their long- term partnership with Moore Group.
The news not only caused Moore Group’s stock to drop but also let Isabella make a solid profit on her trades.
On top of that, the market speculation triggered by the news had given the Carter family’s stocks a boost…
But coincidences like that rarely happened without someone pulling strings.
Barry had done more than Isabella had expected.
“Sander knows you can’t appear in public easily and asked me to tell you that the Whitman family will act on your behalf.”
“Noted.”
After Isabella replied, Barry didn’t send anything else.
Barry was highly efficient–he just never bothered with small talk.
In that way, he was a bit like Xavier.
“Ms. Carter.”
Isabella had just casually deleted the messages when she heard Harry’s voice.
She turned. Harry had already come out of the bedroom.
It looked like he was about to leave.
“Dr. Ashford, leaving already?”
Harry nodded and took two boxes of prescription medicine from his bag, handing them to Isabella.
“He’s running a mild fever, but nothing serious. I brought medication–the same kind he used to take years ago when he was working on his health. Once in the morning, once at night, for three days.”
“You can just tell him about the dosage yourself.”
Isabella didn’t take the medicine.

Not leaving him to suffer was already as far as her kindness went–there was no way she was going to play nurse for him too,
This time, absolutely not.
“Um,” Harry paused, “Ms. Carter, you and Xavier really think alike… He said the same thing
Their words had been almost identical.
Earlier, when he’d taken out the medicine and gone to set it down, Xavier had gestured for him to give it to Isabella instead.
Harry’s outstretched hand had been left hanging awkwardly. Before Isabella could say anything else, he quickly set the items on a nearby cabinet.
“It’s getting late, so I’ll get going!”
