My phone buzzed while I was standing by the floor–to–ceiling window in my apartment, downing my third glass of whiskey.
My finger hovered over the screen for three seconds. The booze slowed my reflexes, but my heart was pounding like crazy.
I opened the attachment.
The first page was the marriage status report.
[After checking, the target Norah Hawthorne and Mate Vega have no marriage records in any public databases worldwide.]
No marriage.
They weren’t married.
I slammed the glass down hard. The bottom hit the marble countertop with a sharp clink.
The knot in my chest that had been choking me all night loosened a bit.
But then, a bigger wave of terror hit me like a bucket of ice water dumped on my head.
If they weren’t married… then the kid-
My hands were shaking as I opened the second attachment.
Obstetrics and gynecology medical records.
Three years ago, Washington.
I recognized the clinic’s name. It’s the best private OB–GYN center in the country, and you have to wait six months just to get an appointment.
How the hell did she pull that off?
Alone, in a foreign country, with a belly–no.
Not alone.
Mateo was there too.
That name stabbed into my brain like a rusty nail.
I forced myself to keep reading.
Appointment date, pregnancy week calculations, tests…ly eyes locked onto the line marked in red:
[Based on the first prenatal checkup and ultrasound date, the conception window perfectly matches the 1-2 months before the target left Paris.]
Before she left.

Chapter 198
Before she left me.
My vision went black for a second. I braced myself again the cold plan.
My fingers pressed against the window, leaving a blurry sweat mark
That night at the celebration party.
She looked pale as she watched me rush out holding Amélie.
Later, in the study of the apartment, she told me to be gentle.
Later still, she said at the wedding, she sat in a wheelchair, watching me put a ring on another woman’s finger through the crowd.
Then that woman even cut her hand.
Finally, at the manor’s gate, she curled up in Mateo’s arms and he carried her away-
Every scene, every detail, every thing I ignored, misunderstood, or purposely blocked our–all of it was strangling me like a noose made of cold, hard facts.
I loosened my collar, struggling to breathe.
She was pregnant
Carrying my kid, then left me.
She was alone on that operating table, signing the consent form.
And the guy standing beside her?
Mateo.
“Fuck
I burst out the door like a man on fire.
The elevator mirror in the apartment caught my reflection: bloodshot eyes, hair a total mess, and my shirt buttons all screwed up.
I looked like a lunatic.
Because I was one.
She drove me crazy.
Her secret–hidden inside her for three years–drove me insane.
When I got to the Thornbird Studio,
the door was unlocked. I walked straight in, cutting through the dark lobby toward the only hit room–the lounge

Chapter 198
She wasn’t asleep.
She sat on the couch, flipping through a thick fabric catalog.
Hearing my footsteps, she looked up. When she saw me her face instantly went cold.
“What are you doing here?” Her voice was icy, guarded.
I said nothing. I just walked up to her and crouched down.
From this angle, I could see every tiny flicker on her face.
Tired. Wary.
My eyes couldn’t help but drop to her belly.
Flat, wrapped in a soft knit dress.
But I knew–three years ago–that spot had held a little life.
Our child.

“What are you staring at?” She shrank back a little, clutching the fabric book to her chest like a shield.
“Norah,” I said, my voice rough as hell, “we need to talk.
She turned her face away. “The contract’s done. There’s nothing left to talk about. Lucien, remember? We’re just business partners now.”
“Screw the business!” I snapped, grabbing her wrist hard
She flinched, trying to pull away. “Let go of me!”
“Where’s the kid?” I locked eyes with her, each word sharp as a knife.
Time froze.
The color drained from her face. Her lips parted slightly. Those fierce, always–ready–for–a–fight eyes showed panic for the first time.
“What… kid?” Her voice trembled.
“Our kid.” I squeezed her wrist tighter, refusing to let her dodge me. “The one you were carrying when you Jeft me three years ago.”
She stopped breathing.
Then she laughed.
Cold. Broken.
“You’ve been spying on me? Lucien Constantine, you never change. Always digging, always doubting, always
nvinced I’m hiding some dirty secret.”
“Answer me!” I growled, feeling my mind snap. “Wheres the kid? Boy or girl? How old now? What’s their

“None of your business.” She yanked her hand free and stood up, ready to walk away.
I moved fast, blocking her path.

“It’s none of my business?” I laughed bitterly. “That’s my kid! Norah, you’ve been carrying my baby, ran off on your own for three years, and now you tell me it’s none of my business?!”
“Well, what else?” She lifted her chin, tears glistening in her eyes. “Tell you, and then what? You want me to make you choose between the wedding and our kid all over again?”
“I never made that choice!” I shouted. “The wedding was fake! I never planned to marry Amélie! It was all-”
“All plans, all schemes, all part of your Lucien Constantine’s game!” She cut me off, tears finally falling, but her voice was sharp as a knife. “I know! I found out later But Lucien, the damage is done!”
She raised her hand, pointing at her chest. “Right here, died once already.”
She stared at me, her eyes filled with endless despair and hatred.
“The baby was lost because of your plan.”
“I was lying there alone on that cold operating table, not knowing where my future was-”
“Where were you?”
