Heat surged up from behind me, the flames licking dangerously close to my back.

Lucien grabbed me first, pulling me onto the windowsil and shielding me with his own body, using his back to block most of the heat.
I heard him suck in a painful breath.
Outside the window, a wild storm raged, and below us was a cliff dropping into dark, churning water.
“Use the drainpipe! Now!” He pointed to a rusty metal pipe running from the roof all the way down.
I stared at that wet, slippery pipe swaying in the wind and rain, then glanced down at the jagged rocks and crashing waves below. My legs went weak.
“I…”
“Don’t be scared! Look at me!” Lucien cupped my face with both hands.
His face was smeared with soot and blood, but his eyes shone bright and steady.
“Norah, listen to me. We’re not dying here. This isn’t over between us, so don’t even think about running away! Grab the pipe and climb down step by step. I’m right above you, and I’ll protect you. Trust me!”
His eyes and words hit me like a shot of courage, and the fear started to fade.
I took a deep breath, the air thick with smoke and rain, and nodded hard.
I turned around and grabbed the cold, slippery pipe.
Clenching my teeth, I used every ounce of strength to start climbing down.
The pipe was thick but badly rusted–some spots dug into my hands, others were so slick I couldn’t get a grip.
I had to hug it tight with my arms and wrap my legs around it, inching down little by little.
My palms got scraped raw by the rough rust, burning like fire.
I heard movement above me–Lucien had climbed out oo, not far from my head.
We were like two geckos stuck to the cliff wall, every move a struggle.
After climbing about ten or twelve feet-
Suddenly-
“BOOM–!!!”
A massive explosion thundered above us!
A scorching blast of hot air rushed out the window!

I felt the pipe shaking violently right over my head! The bricks holding it in place loosened from the blast. and chunks of stone started falling.
Then the worst happened-
A burning wooden beam was blasted out by the explosion, smashing right onto the pipe joint above us!
“CRACK!”
The pipe let out a sickening snap.
“Norah! Hold on!!!”
I heard Lucien’s shout just as my body started to fall!
The anchor point snapped, and the pipe suddenly tore away from the wall, dragging both of us down- straight off a cliff dozens of meters high, plunging toward the raging sea below!
The wind howled past my ears, rainwater flooded into my mouth and nose, and the terror of falling stole my voice.
Then, out of nowhere, I felt a tight grip around my wais-
It was Lucien. As we fell, he grabbed me, pulled me close, and then spun us around hard!
He used his back to shield us from the jagged rocks below.
Time seemed to stretch and shrink all at once.
“BAM–!!!”
We crashed into a deeper patch of water near the shore.
The salty, freezing sea instantly flooded my mouth, nos, and ears.
Pressure slammed in from every direction.
The pain from the impact blacked out my vision, and ny lungs screamed for air–I was suffocating.
In the chaos, I felt the arms around my waist loosen.
No…
Lucien!
I struggled in the cold, dark water, thrashing with every limb, instinctively clawing my way up.
“Splash-!”
Finally breaking the surface, I coughed violently, gulping down the rain–mixed air like it was gold
The storm still raged, waves crashing one after another
I fought to steady myself in the water, pushing hair and seawater out of my eyes, panic flooding my mind as

I scanned around.
“Lucien! Lucien!”
The lighthouse on the cliff blazed like a giant torch, painting the sky and sea red.
In that fiery glow, I finally spotted him.
He was floating just a few meters away, face down, completely still.
“No…”
My heart clenched like a cold hand squeezing tight.
Summoning every ounce of strength, I swam toward him like my life depended on it.
The waves were brutal; even moving forward an inch felt like climbing a mountain.
My palms and ankles burned, but I didn’t care.
At last, I reached him.
My hands trembled as I grabbed his shoulders and struggled to turn his face toward me.
His eyes were shut tight, his skin ghostly pale, lips drained of all color.
A fresh cut on his forehead bled steadily, quickly washed away by the sea.
“Lucien! Wake up! Lucien!” I slapped his face, my voice racking with tears.
No response.
I shakily slid my fingers under his nose.
There was still a faint, broken breath.
He was alive!
Relief and terror hit me like a freight train, making my whole body go weak.
I couldn’t let my guard down.

We weren’t far from shore. He had to get out of this freezing water right now–he needed emergency help!
I gritted my teeth, slipped one arm under his armpit, and held him tight. With my other hand, I paddled like hell toward the nearest rocky shore.
It was only a few dozen feet away, but it felt like a million miles.
His weight, the drag of the water, my drained strength–every stroke was a brutal fight.
I don’t know how long it took, but finally, my toes hit the rough sand and stones.
ing the last bit of strength I had, I hauled him up ont a slightly flatter rock.
Then I collapsed beside him, gasping hard, shivering from the cold.

“Lucien! Lucien!” I slapped his face, but he didn’t respond. Cold rain mixed with blood from the cut on his forehead, running down his pale, handsome face.
No. He couldn’t just die here!
“Lucien… wake up…” I scrambled to my knees beside him, clasped my hands together, and pressed down on his cold chest with everything I had.
One, two…
“Can you hear me? Lucien! Don’t you dare die!”
Rain and tears blurred my vision.
I didn’t care about anything else—I just kept pressing, even as my arms started to burn. But still, no response.
No… this can’t be happening!
Mouth–to–mouth!
I bent down, pinched his freezing nose shut, and forced his tight lips open.
His lips were completely colorless. I tasted the bitter mix of seawater and blood.
I took a deep breath and blew air hard into his mouth.
His chest twitched slightly.
“Please… Lucien, wake up…” I cried, repeating the motion over and over.
“You damn bastard! Can you hear me? You’re not allowed to die! You better wake the hell up!”
