Chapter 169
Norah’s Perspective

I stumbled through the door, completely drained. My body felt like lead. I barely made it to the sofa before I collapsed, out cold.
Drowsiness wrapped around me. Some time later, through the haze, I felt a soft weight drape over me, followed by a familiar, comforting warmth.
I forced my eyes open. Lucien was there, gently tucking his suit jacket around my shoulders. The fine wool carried his scent–cedar and something uniquely him.
Before I could speak, he carefully slid a hand under my head, lifting it gently before settling it onto his lap. The world tilted, and I was looking up at him. The afternoon light streamed through the window, softening the sharp lines of his face. He gazed down, his expression focused, unusually tender.
Exhaustion pulled me back toward sleep. My eyelids grew heavy, the world fading at the edges.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star…
The childish melody sliced through the calm. The kids‘ ringtone!
I jolted awake instantly, my heart hammering. A cold sweat broke out on my skin.
Lucien turned toward the sound, a flicker of confusion crossing his face, He was already moving, reaching for my phone on the coffee table before I could react.
“Your alarm?” he asked casually, handing it to me.
“Don’t touch it!” I shrieked, lunging forward to snatch the phone from his hand.
His
eyes caught the screen before I could hide it. A playful, probing smirk touched his lips. “My Little Stars‘? I didn’t know you used such… adorable pet names.”
My heart jumped into my throat. “It’s… a charity project,” I stammered, my mind racing. “A co–design for a children’s foundation. The Starlight Project.”
“Is that so?” The suspicion on his face only deepened.
I couldn’t meet his gaze. “I have to take this.” I turned on my heel and fled to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I leaned against it, sucking in a shaky breath before answering.
“Mommy!” It was Leo, his voice trying to be cool but edged with a whine. “Luna grabbed my Transformer and broke it!”
“Wahhh…! Brother is lying! He wouldn’t even let me touchit!” Luna’s cries wailed through the speaker.
A headache bloomed at my temples. “Okay, okay, both of you, quiet down,” I whispered, forcing patience. “Leo, you’re the big brother, you have to be more patient… Luna, sweetie, don’t cry…”
Footsteps sounded outside the door. I froze.

“… Mommy will buy a new one, I promise, just be good…” I cooed into the phone, my heart in my throat.
The doorknob jiggled.
“Mommy?” Lucien’s voice was right outside, low and deliberate. “Norah. Who are you talking to in there?”
A shudder ran through me. I ended the call, fumbled for the faucet, and twisted it open. The roar of water filled the room.
I stared at my pale reflection in the mirror. He heard. He must have heard me.
Splashing cold water on my face, I willed myself to calm down. A few seconds later, I turned off the water and opened the door.
Lucien was leaning against the doorframe. His eyes pinned me, “I could have sworn I heard… ‘Mommy.”
I lifted my chin. “It was the foundation director. The children at the orphanage all call her ‘Mama“.” I injected a note of challenge into my tone.
“Really?” He clearly didn’t buy it.
“What?” I decided to go on the offensive. “Since when do you monitor my calls? I don’t recall that in our contract. Or are you suddenly playing the jealous husband? A spot check?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped into the bathroom, closing the door with a soft click. The space felt smaller. He advanced until the sink pressed against my back.
“A spot check?” He chuckled, the sound deep and husky. He braced his hands on the counter, caging me in. “Norah. Do you really think I didn’t hear you?”
My stomach tightened.
He leaned down, his breath fanning my face. But his eyes held no anger–only pure mischief. “You were so gentle on the phone just now,” he murmured, winding a strand of my damp hair around his finger.
The tension vanished, replaced by irritation. He was teasing me.
A slow smile curved my lips. I looped my arms around his neck and pressed against him. “Oh? And… would you like to hear it?”
Lucien’s body stiffened.
I let my chest brush against his. “Baby-” I whispered against his skin.
I felt his heartbeat kick against mine. His arm shot around my waist, yanking me closer. “Norah,” he growled, voice strained. “Don’t play with fire.”
“Play with fire?” I traced a path over his Adam’s apple. “Lucien, you lit the match.”
I pressed my knee against him. A choked groan escaped him. I smiled. “Didn’t you want to know what I was saying? I can tell you,” I whispered against his car. “But it depends on how well you can… please me.”
