He said no.
But given how strangely he was acting, Anastasia couldn't shake her unease. After a moment's thought, she found a phone number she had never dialed before—one Sonder had given her in her past life.
Her heart pounding with a nervous energy, she made the call.
It rang and rang, but no one picked up.
Anastasia frowned. That was odd. He had just been messaging her, so his phone should have been nearby.
Just as she was about to hang up, the call connected.
"Sonder?"
The line was silent. No one spoke, but she could hear quiet breathing, and unless she was mistaken, it sounded a little tense.
"Can you hear me?" she asked gently.
A faint shuffling sound came from the other end, and a moment later, it seemed someone else had taken the phone.
"I'm sorry, this is the attending nurse. The patient is unable to speak right now. Can I help you with something?"
Anastasia was taken aback. "Is he alright? Would it be possible for you to tell me his condition? I'm worried about him."
In the hospital room, the nurse glanced questioningly at the quiet young man in the bed. After a couple of seconds, she replied apologetically, "I'm sorry, but that's confidential patient information... He did want me to tell you not to worry, though. It's nothing serious."
After asking a few more questions, Anastasia felt slightly reassured and hung up.
Then she sent Sonder a message.
[Summer: Sorry for calling out of the blue. I didn't realize it was a bad time.]
[Summer: But if you need help with anything, I hope you won't hide it from me. We're friends, after all.]
