But he never imagined that when Susan ran short on cash, she would target that money.
She lied and said she'd bought his prescription, but in reality, she'd filled the bottle with vitamins. The money for his medicine had gone to bail Lennon out of trouble after he'd gotten drunk and assaulted someone.
His stable health over the years had been maintained by that expensive medication. The moment Susan switched it, his condition collapsed like an avalanche. He didn't even make it through the night before being rushed to the hospital.
"It's fine," Carter finally murmured, his lips pale and bloodless.
Hearing this, Susan relaxed.
"I knew you were an understanding boy. You must be worried about him too. The thing is, the money we had wasn't quite enough. The other party is demanding more compensation, or else they'll press charges. Do you think you could help a little more?"
She looked at Carter expectantly.
For a rare moment, Carter was stunned. He finally lifted his gaze to the woman standing by his bed.
Susan, oblivious to his emotional state, pleaded, "Carter, out of you three siblings, your grandfather likes you the most. If you go and tell him you need money for medicine, he'll give it to you."
"I can't let your father know that Lennon hurt someone. You're the only one who can help him right now. You're brothers. You'll help him, won't you?"
Her voice was incredibly gentle, but it sent a chill through Carter's heart.
He neither agreed nor refused. Instead, he asked, "Is that all? Just enough money for him?"
Susan thought he had agreed, and a flicker of joy crossed her face.
Her first thought wasn't of anything else. "If you can, you should ask for more. Just tell your grandfather it's all for medicine..."
