Lyla looked at Robert with nothing but grief. She knew he always favored Rowan and put him first. But they were all his grandkids Was it really just because he couldn’t control Janus? She wondered.
“Grandpa is Rowan really the only grandson you care about? What about the rest of us? You weren’t like this before. Why are you doing this? Is it just because Janus wouldn’t marry the woman you picked? Does everyone have to be your puppet for you to be happy?”
A loud slap echoed through the office. Robert still had his hand up.
Lyla touched her face and stared at him like she didn’t even know who he was.
The noise shocked the two men who just walked in. Janus rushed to Lyla and looked at her cheek. “Are you okay?”
Lyla just kept looking at Robert. She looked completely broken.
Janus looked at Robert. His voice was cold. “Grandpa why did you hit her?”
Robert looked at Lyla with total hatred. “Why did I hit her? I’m teaching her how to talk to her elders. She’s got the nerve to stand there and yell at me. If she’s talking back now what’s she going to do when I’m too old to move? Let me tell you something. Until ! pick an heir I still run the Soren family. You don’t get to mouth off to me. Do it again and you can both get the hell out of this family.”
Janus looked at Robert and pulled Lyla close to him. “So that’s the plan? You’re just going to kick us both out?”
Robert narrowed his eyes. “What? You’re going to talk back to me too?”
The two of them stared each other down. The room felt like ice. Lyla grabbed Janus’s arm and shook her head. She was begging him to stop.
Janus finally looked away. He spoke softly to Lyla. “Go on. Get out of here and take care of your face.”
Lyla looked at him worried.
“It’s fine” Janus said as he patted her back.
Lyla left with the assistant and the room went quiet.
Janus sat down on the sofa and crossed his legs. “Alright. You called me here. What do you want?”
Robert stared at him. “Is that how you talk to your grandfather?”
