Outside the room Jared leaned against the wall and smoked one cigarette after another. His mind had been a mess of conflicting emotions since he got the news this morning.
Thirty years. It had been nearly thirty years since he last heard word of his brother coming home. He truly thought they would never see each other again. It was good to have him back.
He thought back to how ruthless their father had been and how Derrick refused to back down. That pride had cost them three decades. He hadn’t seen his own brother in all that time. He wondered how much Derrick had changed and if he would still call him by his name like he used to.
A moment later Greg’s voice drifted from inside the room. Jared quickly crushed his cigarette into the nearby bin and hurried inside
“Dad you called for me?”
Greg was staring out the window his eyes red and swollen. His voice was thick and raspy. “Tell him to come over.”
Jared froze for a split second before snapping back to reality. “Alright. I will call him right now and tell him to get here.” He pulled out his phone immediately.
At Ravenwood Manor.
Derrick sat on the sofa looking anxious and restless. He kept checking his watch every few minutes.
“Relax” Uriel said gently. “Jared will call as soon as there is news. Getting worked up won’t help.”
Derrick’s brow was knit tight. “I can’t help it. It has been hours and we haven’t heard a thing. What if Dad fainted again the moment he heard I was back?”
“I doubt it” Uriel said hesitantly. She looked over at the man handling documents nearby. “Sebastian why don’t you call and check?”
Sebastian paused and looked up perfectly calm. “Don’t worry. Uncle Jared knows what he is doing. He will find the right moment to tell Grandpa. There is no need to stress.”
Just as he spoke the phone on the table began to ring.
Derrick grabbed it before anyone else could. “Jared? Is it okay? Does Dad want to see me?”
The voice on the other end caught Jared off guard. It had been so many years since he heard that voice. It was familiar yet carried the weight of a stranger.
When Jared didn’t respond immediately Derrick pressed on. “Jared? Can you hear me?”
Jared snapped out of it. “I hear you, Dad wants to see you. Get over here now.
Derrick was visibly shaken with excitement. “Okay. I am on my way” He hung up and turned to Uriel. “He wants to see me
Uriel smiled at his expression. “We heard. What are you waiting for? Let’s get to the hospital.
